According to the “Global Trade Outlook and Statistics Update: October 2026” report released by the World Trade Organization (WTO), the global merchandise trade growth forecast has been raised to 3.9% for Calendar Year 2026 (CY26), from its previous estimate of 1.9%.
The report projects global trade growth at 4.1% for CY27. Additionally, the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth is projected at 2.6% in CY26 and 2.9% in CY27.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal has attended the Group of Twenty (G20) Trade Ministers’ Meeting held in Milwaukee, USA.
The Joint Ministerial Statement was released by the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) and was signed by 15 participating countries, including India and the USA.
Zhu Rongji, former Premier of China who was known for spearheading major economic reforms and restructuring state-owned industries, passed away at the age of 97.
India has deposited its Instrument of Acceptance for the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (AFS), becoming a party to the agreement. India is the 123rd member to deposit its acceptance for the same.
The AFS, adopted at the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference in Geneva in 2022, is the first multilateral WTO agreement with an environmental sustainability objective.
It prohibits government support for illegal fishing and overexploitation of stocks, contributing to the protection of marine life. It is to be noted that the agreement entered into force in September 2025, following acceptance by two-thirds of WTO members.
India has signed a bilateral accession protocol with Ethiopia in Geneva, Switzerland, to facilitate the latter’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO).
It is to be noted that India supports the accession of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and developing nations to the WTO to promote inclusive growth and South-South cooperation. The agreement was fast-tracked under the guidance of Union Minister Piyush Goyal.
