Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has launched the 'Seafarer-First' initiative to safeguard Indian seafarers operating in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman.

The initiative is a response to the escalating maritime security concerns in West Asia. It will be implemented through the coordination of the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Navy, and the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS).

Sridhar Vembu, Co-founder of Zoho Corporation Pvt Ltd, has inaugurated the Thiruvanmiyur campus of the VELS Institute of Science, Technology, & Advanced Studies (VISTAS) in Chennai. It is to be noted that this facility is recognised as India's first AI-integrated vertical university campus.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has launched India's first trial Index of Services Production (ISP) for April 2026. This high-frequency monthly indicator serves as the services-sector counterpart to the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).

The trial series uses 2024-25 as the base year and is structured according to the National Industrial Classification (NIC), 2025. The ISP covers 19 service sub-sectors, with updates scheduled to be released on the 29th of every month.

Axis Max Life Insurance Ltd has launched a retirement-focused insurance product named 'Axis Max Life Smart Retirement Income with Sustained Earnings Plan' (Smart RISE). The plan integrates a Guaranteed Annuity with a Variable Annuity linked to the NIFTY 50 Index.

India hosted the BRICS Women Ministerial Meeting (WMM) in Kochi, Kerala under its BRICS Chairship 2026. During the meeting, member nations reached a consensus on two initiatives proposed by India: the 'BRICS Digital Repository of Best Practices' and 'BRICS Digital Capacity Building'.

India also hosted the 3rd BRICS Transport Ministers' Meeting (TMM) in Nagpur, Maharashtra, chaired by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. The meeting concluded with the unanimous adoption of the Ministerial Declaration.

PM Narendra Modi has visited New Zealand at the invitation of PM Christopher Luxon, marking the final leg of his 3-nation tour which also included Indonesia and Australia. He received a traditional Maori powhiri ceremonial welcome at the Government House in Auckland, followed by bilateral talks.

The meeting resulted in 18 major outcomes, including the signing of 10 MoUs and the elevation of India-New Zealand bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership (SP). Both nations also adopted the 'Roadmap to 2030'.

Key announcements included a target to double bilateral trade to NZD 7 billion (₹35,000 crore) by 2030 and the establishment of a Maritime Security Dialogue. It is to be noted that New Zealand has nominated Maritime Security as a priority pillar under the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) and has officially joined the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), led by India.

Russia has successfully launched the 'Soyuz MS-29' crewed mission to the International Space Station (ISS) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The mission was executed using the Soyuz-2.1a launch vehicle.

The crew includes the NASA astronaut Anil Menon and the Roscosmos cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina.

Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu has launched the 'Pillale Sampada' (Children are Wealth) initiative in Vijayawada on World Population Day (July 11).

Under this scheme, eligible families will receive financial assistance of ₹30,000 for the birth of a third child and ₹40,000 for the birth of a fourth child. The initiative aims to address the challenges of declining fertility rates and an ageing population in the state.

Madhya Pradesh CM Dr. Mohan Yadav has inaugurated the 'MP Tech Growth Conclave 3.0: GCC – Data Centres and Semiconductors' in Bhopal. The summit has secured investment commitments worth over ₹40,000 crore.

Notably, Submer India (Spain) has proposed an investment of ₹19,000 crore ($2 billion) for hyperscale data centre infrastructure in Bhopal. Furthermore, the state government signed an MoU with Google Play to focus on digital innovation, startup growth, and developer capacity building.

The Rajasthan government, through the Food Safety and Drug Controller Commissionerate, has banned the sale, storage, marketing, and display of 8 major energy drink brands in the state.

The ban was imposed due to the high levels of caffeine and sugar in these products, as well as misleading marketing claims that pose health risks to consumers.

Policybazaar, an online insurance marketplace in India, has appointed veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan as its brand ambassador.

He will spearhead a nationwide awareness campaign titled "Parivaar Sabse Pehle" (Family Comes First), which was developed by MagicCircleon Communications.

PV Sindhu has won the women's singles title at the Japan Open 2026, becoming the first Indian player to win this tournament. She defeated the 3-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the final held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. She received a prize money of $66,500 for this victory.

In the men's singles category, Christo Popov of France claimed the title by defeating Koki Watanabe of Japan.

The Spain football team, captained by Rodri, has won the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Argentina by 1-0 in the final held at the New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium), USA. The tournament, which featured 48 participating teams, was co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Ferran Torres scored the match-winning goal in the 106th minute and was named the Man of the Match, while Luis de la Fuente became the oldest manager to win a FIFA World Cup.

Individual tournament awards: Golden Ball - Rodri (Spain); Golden Glove - Unai Simon (Spain); Best Young Player - Pau Cubarsi (Spain); Golden Boot - Kylian Mbappe (France) with 10 goals (first back-to-back winner); and FIFA Fair Play Award - Netherlands. The tournament prize money structure awarded $51 million to the champions.

Moozhikkal Pankajakshi, a renowned exponent of the traditional puppetry art form Nokkuvidya Pavakkali, passed away at the age of 90. She was a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2020.

Sir Garfield Sobers, a legendary West Indies cricketer and one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of the sport, passed away at the age of 89.

He was the first cricketer to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket. The International Cricket Council (ICC) honours his legacy through the 'Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy', awarded annually to the 'ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year'.
