The India-led Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA) has launched its flagship Global Biofuel Champion Fellowship (GBCF) programme at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi.

The GBA has selected 15 early-career researchers from leading global universities and research institutions to serve as GBA Ambassadors for a tenure of 2 years. Each fellow will receive a research grant of $15,000. The selected cohort includes 2 researchers from India: Ruchi Agrawal from The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Delhi, and Abhishek Sahoo from the IIT Delhi.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has approved financial assistance of ₹150 crore for India's first private-sector 91 Kilo Litres Per Day (KLPD) Hybrid Second-Generation (2G) Ethanol Biorefinery, located in Dhanaura, Uttar Pradesh.

The assistance is provided through the Centre for High Technology (CHT) under the PM JI-VAN (Jaiv Indhan- Vatavaran Anukool fasal awashesh Nivaran) Yojana. The biorefinery produces sustainable 2G ethanol using agricultural residues.

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has launched India’s first passenger Flex-Fuel Vehicle (FFV), the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, capable of running on ethanol-petrol blends ranging from 20% ethanol (E20) to E100.

It is to be noted that Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also launched Hero MotoCorp’s first flex-fuel motorcycles, the ‘Splendor+ Flex Fuel’ and ‘HF Deluxe Flex Fuel’, in New Delhi. These initiatives are aimed at promoting ethanol-based mobility in India.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MoCAF&PD), has notified specifications for E22, E25, E27, and E30 fuel blends. These specifications set standards for petrol blended with up to 30% ethanol, extending beyond the existing E20 blend target.

The new norms have been established under the standard ‘IS 19850:2026’ for ‘E22, E25, E27 and E30 Fuel, Admixture of Anhydrous Ethanol and Motor Gasoline for Usage in Positive Ignition Engine Powered Vehicles’.
