Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma has inaugurated a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Eri Silk Weaving at the Integrated Textile Tourism Complex (ITTC) in Ri Sai, Nongpoh.

The inauguration was held on August 7 as part of the 12th National Handloom Day celebrations and the conclusion of National Handloom Week. It is to be noted that Eri Silk, also known as Ryndia, is a silk variety indigenous to Meghalaya.

The Geographical Indications Registry (GIR), under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), has granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to the centuries-old Pithora Painting tradition of Gujarat.

These paintings are traditionally created by Lakharas on the inner walls and verandahs of tribal homes.

The iconic Jolbhora (Jalbhara) Sandesh from Chandannagar in West Bengal has been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

This tag designates Chandannagar (Hooghly district) as the unique place of origin for the sweet, safeguarding its authentic recipe and cultural heritage.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma have launched Mission ‘Senehjori’ to transform the Assam Muga Silk sector into a globally competitive luxury textile ecosystem.

Muga silk is the world’s only naturally golden silk and India’s first GI-tagged silk. The total budget for the revitalization of this sector is ₹396-411 crore, with a contribution of ₹136-151 crore from the Ministry. The initiative is structured as a 3-year roadmap with milestones to be completed by 2028.
