Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit assumed charge as the 29th Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force on 31 October 2026 in New Delhi. He succeeded Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, who superannuated after 42 years of service. A day after taking charge, Dixit unveiled VAYU, a four pillar roadmap focused on readiness, self reliance, innovation and joint operations.

Who Is Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit?

Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit is a fighter pilot with nearly four decades of service in the Indian Air Force. The Government announced his appointment as the next Chief of the Air Staff on 6 October 2026. He took charge in the rank of Air Chief Marshal, the four star rank held by the professional head of the Air Force.

Dixit was born on 9 December 1966. He spent his early years in Lucknow, with ancestral roots in Maholi in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA) at Khadakwasla, the joint training academy for Army, Navy and Air Force officer cadets. He was commissioned into the fighter stream of the Air Force on 6 December 1986.

Dixit is a Qualified Flying Instructor and an Experimental Test Pilot. A test pilot flies new or modified aircraft to check their limits and certifies them as safe for other pilots. He has more than 3,500 hours of flying experience on over 20 types of aircraft. His fleet includes the Mirage 2000, variants of the MiG, Jaguar, Kiran, Hawk, IL-78 and the indigenous Tejas.

His education includes the Defence Services Command and Staff College in Bangladesh and the National Defence College in New Delhi. Both are senior military colleges that train selected officers in strategy, joint operations and national security.

Dixit has taken part in Operation Safed Sagar, the air operations during the 1999 Kargil War, Operation Rakshak in Jammu and Kashmir, and Operation Sindoor. He commanded a Mirage 2000 squadron, a forward base support unit in the western sector and Air Force Station Bidar in Karnataka, a premier fighter training base. His senior staff roles are listed below.

Dixit is widely recognised for his role in modernisation. He helped finalise the Jaguar and MiG-27 upgrade programmes. He also worked on the Initial Operational Clearance and Final Operational Clearance of the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas Mk-I. Clearance here means the formal approval that declares the aircraft fit for induction and combat use. He also led acceptance flights and ferry of 10 newly acquired Mirage 2000 aircraft from France to India.

His gallantry and distinguished service have earned him four major medals. He received the Vayu Sena Medal in 2006, the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2011, the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2023 and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2026.

Change of Command: From AP Singh to Ashutosh Dixit

Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh served as the 28th Chief of the Air Staff before Dixit. He superannuated on 31 October 2026 after 42 years of service. Dixit assumed charge the same afternoon.

Singh is also a fighter pilot, test pilot and qualified flying instructor with more than 5,000 hours of flying. He had served as project director for flight testing of the Tejas and led the MiG-29 upgrade team in Moscow. As chief, he led the Air Force during Operation Sindoor, launched on 7 May 2025 against terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

In its farewell statement, the Indian Air Force said Singh strengthened operational capability, combat preparedness and modernisation. The statement noted his decisive leadership during Operation Sindoor, where the force showed precision and resolve. It also recalled his close connect with air warriors at all levels. Singh paid homage at the National War Memorial in New Delhi on his last day. He was then given a ceremonial Guard of Honour at Air Force Station New Delhi before handing over command.

Dixit also began his tenure with homage at the National War Memorial. He then received a ceremonial Guard of Honour at Air Force Station New Delhi. In his first remarks, Dixit thanked the President, the Prime Minister and the Defence Minister for the trust placed in him. He praised Singh for handing over a force in a high state of readiness. Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia was named to succeed Dixit as the next Vice Chief of the Air Staff.

What Is the VAYU Theme to Guide the Indian Air Force?

The VAYU theme is the new guiding vision announced by Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit on 1 November 2026. VAYU stands for Vigilance, Victory and Readiness, Aatmanirbharta, Yukti and Unity of Effort. It sets four clear priorities to make the Air Force ready, self reliant, innovative and fully joint with the Army and Navy.

The word Vayu means air in Sanskrit. The Indian Air Force is called Bharatiya Vayu Sena in Hindi. Dixit said the security environment remains demanding. Drones, long range precision weapons, space, cyber, artificial intelligence and the electromagnetic spectrum are changing the character of war. The Air Force must transform for the next decade while staying ready to fight and win today.

LetterPillarCore Meaning
VVigilance, Victory and ReadinessEvery unit ready to respond at a moment’s notice, restore combat strength
AAatmanirbhartaSelf reliance through Indian aircraft, sensors and weapons
YYuktiIngenuity through new doctrine, technology and tactics
UUnity of EffortJoint planning and fighting with Army, Navy and national agencies

V for Vigilance, Victory and Readiness

Vigilance means constant watch and quick response. Dixit said every squadron, every radar, every air defence unit and every air warrior must be ready to respond at a moment’s notice. Readiness is his foremost task.

A central part of this pillar is restoring combat strength toward the sanctioned level. The Air Force has a sanctioned strength of 42 fighter squadrons. The current strength is close to 30 squadrons after the retirement of the MiG-21 and delays in delivery of the Tejas Mk1A. Dixit said credible air power must deter conflict and, if needed, fight and win across the full spectrum of operations.

A for Aatmanirbharta

Aatmanirbharta means self reliance. Dixit named Indian sensors, Indian platforms and Indian weapons as the highest priority. He listed the Tejas Mk1A, Tejas Mk2, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) stealth fighter, and Indian made sensors and weapons as the core of future capability.

The message is clear. India will fight with Indian solutions. These systems must be available in large numbers to sustain long operations. This links self reliance directly to combat power, not just to industry.

Y for Yukti

Yukti means ingenuity, skill and smart solutions. This pillar focuses on innovation in doctrine, procedures and technology.

Dixit listed networked and AI enabled command and control systems, layered counter drone defences, responsive maintenance, force protection and resilience as focus areas. He also named near space as an emerging operational domain for the Air Force. Near space refers to the region between normal aircraft altitude and outer space, which is useful for surveillance and communications. The aim is to detect threats faster, protect bases better and keep operations running under attack.

U for Unity of Effort

Unity of Effort means planning and fighting as one team. Dixit said the Air Force will plan and fight along with the Army, the Navy and national agencies from the very first step. Air power delivers most when it is integrated from the start.

This fits the wider vision of JAI, which stands for Jointness, Aatmanirbharta and Innovation. Dixit brings direct experience to this task. As Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, he worked at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff on coordination among the three services. He also stressed welfare of air warriors, Agniveervayu personnel, civilians, veterans, Veer Naris and their families, with personal attention to their training, safety and dignity.

Indian Air Force at a Glance: Commands, Motto and Leadership

The Chief of the Air Staff is the professional head of the Indian Air Force. The post carries the rank of Air Chief Marshal. The Vice Chief of the Air Staff, an Air Marshal, is the second in command. Air Headquarters is located at Vayu Bhawan in New Delhi.

The Indian Air Force was established on 8 October 1932. This day is observed every year as Air Force Day. Its motto is Nabha Sparsham Deeptam, which means Touch the Sky with Glory. The line is taken from Chapter 11 of the Bhagavad Gita.

The first Indian to head the force was Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee. He took charge on 1 April 1954 and is remembered as the Father of the Indian Air Force. The only five star officer of the Air Force is Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh. No other officer has held this ceremonial rank.

The Air Force is organised into seven commands. Five are operational commands and two are functional commands.

CommandHeadquartersType
Western Air CommandNew DelhiOperational
Eastern Air CommandShillong, MeghalayaOperational
Central Air CommandPrayagraj, Uttar PradeshOperational
South Western Air CommandGandhinagar, GujaratOperational
Southern Air CommandThiruvananthapuram, KeralaOperational
Training CommandBengaluru, KarnatakaFunctional
Maintenance CommandNagpur, MaharashtraFunctional

Each command is headed by an Air Officer Commanding in Chief in the rank of Air Marshal. The basic fighting unit is the squadron. A fighter squadron normally has 18 aircraft and is commanded by a Wing Commander or Group Captain.

The officer ranks rise from Flying Officer to Air Chief Marshal. An Air Marshal broadly equals a Lieutenant General in the Army. An Air Vice Marshal equals a Major General. A Group Captain equals a Colonel. An Air Chief Marshal is senior to an Air Marshal, who in turn is senior to an Air Vice Marshal.

Why the New Appointment Matters for Fighter Strength and Self Reliance

The change of chief comes at a critical time for air power. Squadron numbers are low. Old jets have retired. Deliveries of new jets have been slow. More squadrons will retire in the coming years. The new chief must therefore balance immediate readiness with long term rebuilding.

Three challenges stand out. First, numbers must be restored without losing quality. Second, Indian industry must deliver Tejas Mk1A on time and move faster on Tejas Mk2 and AMCA. Third, new threats from drones, cyber attacks and space based systems need fresh tactics and strong air defences.

Dixit is well placed for this task. As a test pilot, he understands aircraft development from the cockpit. As Deputy Chief, he handled capability development and procurement. As head of Central Air Command and as Chief of Integrated Defence Staff during Operation Sindoor, he handled operations and joint planning. His VAYU roadmap links these strands. Readiness protects today. Self reliance builds numbers for tomorrow. Ingenuity counters new technology. Unity ensures the Air Force, Army and Navy fight as one force.
