The USISPF Leadership Award
The USISPF Leadership Award, also known as the Global Leadership Award, is presented annually to distinguished leaders who have made exceptional contributions to advancing the strategic, economic, and commercial partnership between India and the United States. The award is conferred during the USISPF Annual Leadership Summit, which brings together senior government officials, industry leaders, and policymakers from both countries.
Previous recipients of the award include Nita M. Ambani (2023), Henry R. Kravis, co-founder of KKR (2024), and in 2025, Arvind Krishna of IBM, Kumar Mangalam Birla of Aditya Birla Group, and Toshiaki Higashihara of Hitachi. In 2022, the award was presented to Chip Kaye of Warburg Pincus and Sumant Sinha of ReNew Power. The list reflects USISPF’s recognition of leaders across business, philanthropy, and clean energy sectors who have strengthened the India-US economic corridor.
The 2026 summit marked the IX edition of the event and was held against the backdrop of America’s 250th Independence Day celebrations. The summit featured a fireside chat with Jacob Helberg, US Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, and a special address by Congressman Ro Khanna.
Sunil Bharti Mittal: A Telecom Pioneer
Sunil Bharti Mittal was born on 23 October 1957 in Ludhiana, Punjab, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Panjab University, Chandigarh in 1976. He started his entrepreneurial journey at the age of 18 with a bicycle parts manufacturing business, using a borrowed capital of ₹20,000. Over the next decade, he became India’s largest importer of portable generators before the government banned their import in 1982. He then pivoted to electronic push-button telephones, which eventually led him to the telecommunications business.
In 1992, Mittal bid successfully for one of India’s first mobile phone network licenses and launched cellular services in Delhi in 1995 under the brand name Airtel through Bharti Cellular Limited. In 1997, the brand was formally established as Bharti Airtel. Within a few years, Bharti became the first telecom company in India to cross the 2 million mobile subscriber mark. Mittal also pioneered the practice of outsourcing network management to equipment providers like Nokia and Ericsson, a business model innovation that dramatically reduced capital costs and allowed Airtel to offer affordable tariffs to Indian consumers.
Bharti Enterprises Today
Today, Bharti Enterprises is one of India’s leading first-generation multinational conglomerates with diversified interests in telecommunications, space communications, digital infrastructure, financial services, real estate, and hospitality. Its flagship company, Bharti Airtel, is a global telecommunications provider with a presence in 17 countries across India, South Asia, and Africa. It serves over 650 million customers and is the second largest mobile operator in the world by customer base.
The group has built strategic joint ventures and partnerships with global leaders including Singtel, British Telecom, SoftBank, Google, Nokia, Ericsson, and AXA, as well as sovereign partners such as the UK and French governments and the Qatar Investment Authority. Notably, Google invested $1 billion in Bharti Airtel in 2022. Mittal also led the creation of Eutelsat Group, a global leader in satellite communications, through the merger of Bharti’s OneWeb with France’s Eutelsat, and serves as its Co-Chairman.
Philanthropy and Global Recognition
Mittal founded the Bharti Airtel Foundation (formerly Bharti Foundation), which runs over 150 Satya Bharti Schools and supports more than 1,000 government schools through its Quality Support Program, providing quality education to underprivileged children in rural India.
Among his many honors, Mittal was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award, in 2007 for his contributions to trade and industry. He was appointed an Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 2024, becoming the first Indian citizen to receive this honour from HM King Charles III, in recognition of his contributions to strengthening business relations between India and the UK. He has also received the GSMA Chairman’s Award (2008), the GSMA Lifetime Achievement Award, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Bath (2025).
Significance of the Award
The USISPF Leadership Award to Sunil Bharti Mittal carries significance on multiple levels. First, it acknowledges the role of Indian business leadership in transforming a key infrastructure sector. Mittal’s Airtel democratised mobile telephony in India, bringing affordable voice and data services to hundreds of millions of people and helping India become one of the world’s largest and most competitive telecom markets.
Second, the award underscores the deepening economic integration between India and the United States. Accepting the honour via a video message, Mittal highlighted the role of the Indian diaspora in the US, which numbers nearly 5 million people and serves as the largest diaspora community from any country in America. He described this community as a “beautiful bridge” between the two nations, supporting cooperation across trade, defence, and advanced technologies.
Third, Mittal used the occasion to express optimism about a pending India-US bilateral trade agreement, stating that he hoped the deal would be finalised within a few weeks. His remarks, directed at US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick who was present at the summit, reflected the industry’s anticipation of closer commercial ties between the two democracies.
