Recent Current Affairs related to Padma Shri

Reema Nanavaty, the Director of the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), has received the Hillary Rodham Clinton Award for her contributions to women’s economic empowerment, livelihoods, peace, and security. She was previously honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013 in the field of social work.

Other recipients of the award include Tory Burch (fashion designer and founder of the Tory Burch Foundation) and Muhammad Yunus (Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2006 and founder of Grameen Bank).

Chef Dhamu (Dr K Damodharan), a legendary Tamil culinary maestro and television personality, passed away at the age of 72. He was a recipient of Padma Shri in 2025.

In 2004, he became the first Indian chef to earn a PhD in Hotel Management and Catering Technology from the University of Madras. He also set a Guinness World Record in 2010 for the longest solo cooking marathon by preparing over 617 dishes in 24 hours.

Guruvayur Dorai, a renowned Mridangam maestro (double-headed percussion instrument used in Carnatic music), passed away at the age of 91.

He is a recipient of Padma Shri in 2025 in the field of Arts.

Roshan Kumari, a renowned Indian classical dancer and an exponent of the Jaipur gharana of Kathak, passed away at the age of 82. She was a recipient of Padma Shri in 1984.

Nana Patekar, a veteran Bollywood actor, passed away at the age of 75. He was a recipient of Padma Shri in 2013 and 3 National Film Awards.

Sethuraman Panchanathan, an Indian-origin computer scientist, has been named the recipient of the Arthur M Bueche Award 2026 by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). He is the first Indian-American and the first individual from Arizona(USA), to receive the honour.

The award is given recognising his leadership in advancing science and technology policy. It is to be noted that he was previously conferred with the Padma Shri in 2025.

Govindan Vijayaraghavan, a distinguished cardiologist, passed away at the age of 84. He was a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2009.

N Purushothama Mallya, a renowned educationist, writer, and Konkani language activist, passed away at the age of 97. He was a recipient of Padma Shri in 2015.

Solomon Pappaiah, a veteran Tamil scholar and renowned orator, passed away at the age of 90. He was a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2021.

SR Janakiraman, a renowned Carnatic vocalist, passed away at the age of 98. He was a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2011.

Sowcar Janaki, a legendary South Indian actress, passed away at the age of 94. She was a recipient of Padma Shri in 2022.

Dr Padma Gurmet has been conferred the Ladakh State Award for the year 2025 in recognition of his contributions to the preservation, promotion, and development of the Sowa-Rigpa system of medicine.

Kailash Chandra Pant, a renowned Hindi writer, passed away at the age of 90.

He was conferred the Padma Shri in 2026 for his contributions to the field of Literature and Education.

Dnyandeo Yashwantrao (DY) Patil, a veteran Congress leader, educationist, and former Governor of Tripura and Bihar, passed away at the age of 90.

He also held additional charge as the Governor of West Bengal and was a recipient of the Padma Shri in 1991.

Moozhikkal Pankajakshi, a renowned exponent of the traditional puppetry art form Nokkuvidya Pavakkali, passed away at the age of 90. She was a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2020.

Girish Bharadwaj, a social worker known as the 'Bridge Man of India', passed away at the age of 76. He was a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2017.

Vijaya Mehta, a veteran Marathi filmmaker and actor, passed away at the age of 91. She was a recipient of the Padma Shri award in 1986.

Robert AF Thurman, a renowned American scholar of Tibetan Buddhism, passed away at the age of 84.
