Veteran Tamil scholar and celebrated orator Solomon Pappaiah passed away on 11 September 2026 in Madurai at the age of 90 after an age-related illness. He was best known as the naduvar, or moderator, of Pattimandram, the traditional Tamil debate format. For more than six decades, he carried classical Tamil literature from academic halls to millions of homes through television.

A Life Rooted in Madurai

Solomon Pappaiah was born as Sundaram Solomon Pappaiah on 22 February 1936 in Sathangudi, a village near Thirumangalam in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu. He was the ninth of 12 children born to A. Sundaram and Bakkiam, a poor family that earned its living from weaving and mill work. Poverty forced the family to shift to Madurai, where his parents found work around Harvey Mills.

Pappaiah studied without electricity, often reading under lantern light. He attended Velliveethiyar School, the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church School and the American College Higher Secondary School in Madurai. A relative pledged jewellery to pay his ₹180 admission fee to The American College, Madurai, and friends later helped him continue his studies. His drawing teacher Arasu encouraged his artistic talent, while Professor Jothi Muthu shaped his love for the Tamil language.

He completed his Bachelor of Arts at The American College and then joined Thiagarajar College for his Master of Arts in Tamil, as part of its first batch of MA Tamil students. He began teaching at The American College in 1961 and served there till 1994, rising to become Head of the Department of Tamil. He lived in the Gnanolipuram area of Madurai with his wife Jayabai, who passed away in January 2025. The couple had a son and a daughter.

The Professor Who Became the Voice of Pattimandram

Pattimandram is a traditional Tamil debate format. Two teams of speakers argue for and against a topic, and a moderator called a naduvar guides the discussion and gives the final judgement at the end. Its roots go back to village debate stages known as patti mandapam, with references found in ancient Tamil works like Manimekalai, one of the five great Tamil epics.

Pappaiah first stepped onto the public stage in 1960 while he was a young lecturer. In the 1970s and 1980s, he travelled across Tamil Nadu and held debates in villages and towns, often during temple festivals. At that time, most debates dealt only with complex religious or literary themes that educated audiences alone could follow.

Pappaiah changed this pattern. He began choosing everyday family and social topics, such as the roles of husband and wife, joint and nuclear families, and duties of parents and children. He explained difficult ideas from the Thirukkural, Sangam poetry, Kambaramayanam and the poems of Subramania Bharathiyar in simple Tamil mixed with humour. This shift brought large numbers of women and common families into the audience, and turned Pattimandram from a scholarly event into a people’s platform.

Television made him a household name. After Doordarshan began telecasting debates in the late 1980s and Sun TV started special festival debates in the early 1990s, his gentle opening address and witty final judgement became a fixed part of Pongal, Tamil Puthandu, Deepavali and New Year mornings. Over his lifetime he moderated more than 12,000 Pattimandrams in India and among Tamil communities abroad. He also trained a new generation of speakers, including popular debaters like Pattimandram Raja, Bharathi Baskar and Uma Maheshwari.

Scholarly Contributions to Tamil Literature

Pappaiah was not only a speaker but also a serious student of classical Tamil. The Thirukkural, composed by Thiruvalluvar, is the most loved Tamil classic. It has 1,330 couplets arranged in 133 chapters across three books on virtue, wealth and love. Pappaiah wrote a widely read commentary on it titled Tirukkural Uraiyudan, and explained its couplets regularly on television in plain language.

He also worked deeply on Sangam literature, the ancient body of Tamil poems composed between about 300 BCE and 300 CE. Sangam poems are grouped into akam, which deals with inner life like love, and puram, which deals with outer life like war and kingship. Pappaiah prepared a new ordered edition titled Purananooru Puthiya Varisai Vagai. The Purananuru is a collection of 400 puram poems. He also simplified the Akananuru, a collection of 400 akam love poems by 144 poets, into three easy volumes so that ordinary readers could understand its tough words and images of the five Tamil landscapes of Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neithal and Palai.

His other noted studies focused on Kamban, the 12th century poet who wrote the Kamba Ramayanam, the Tamil retelling of the Ramayana. His major books are listed below.

He also wrote and directed plays during his college years and acted in a few Tamil films. He was working on a book on Bharathiyar in his final years.

It was instituted on 2 January 1954 and is announced every year on Republic Day. It is conferred by the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Pappaiah, then aged 84, was the first Pattimandram moderator to receive it. Former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had earlier honoured him with the title of Iyalchelvan, and he was widely called Tamil Arignar.

He passed away on 11 September 2026 at a private hospital in Madurai. His last rites were held on 12 September 2026 at the Thathaneri electric crematorium in Madurai with state honours, including a police Guard of Honour.
