India observes National Sports Day, also called Rashtriya Khel Divas, every year on 29 August to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. The day has been celebrated at the national level since 2012 to honour his role in winning three Olympic gold medals for India. It has now grown into a countrywide festival of sport, fitness and recognition for athletes.

Why Is National Sports Day Celebrated on 29 August?

National Sports Day is celebrated on 29 August because it is the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, who was born as Dhyan Singh on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad, now Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. The date was chosen to link the idea of sporting excellence directly with the life of the player who gave India its first golden era in world hockey. Rashtriya Khel Divas is simply the Hindi name for the same observance, and both names are used officially.

The celebration was first included in the list of celebratory days in India in 2012 for nationwide observance. The purpose was twofold. It honours past champions and present athletes, and it reminds citizens, especially children, to make sport and daily physical activity a part of life. Schools, colleges, sports clubs, government offices and training centres organise matches, fitness runs, pledges and tributes on this day.

A common doubt needs to be cleared here. Hockey is often called the national game of India because of this Olympic history, but the government has clarified that India has no officially declared national game. National Sports Day is therefore about the spirit of all sports, not only hockey.

Who Was Major Dhyan Chand, the Wizard of Hockey?

Major Dhyan Chand is widely regarded as the greatest field hockey player in history. He was known as the Wizard of Hockey and The Magician because of his superb ball control, fast passing and ability to score from difficult angles. He played as a centre-forward, the attacking position that leads the scoring effort in hockey.

Dhyan Chand joined the British Indian Army as a sepoy on 29 August 1922, his seventeenth birthday. He served first in the 1st Brahmans, later the Punjab Regiment, and remained in service for 34 years. Much of his early hockey came from army tournaments and regimental games between 1922 and 1926. Since duty left him little time in the day, he often practised at night in the moonlight. The Hindi word for moon is chand, and this habit is said to have added Chand to his name, turning Dhyan Singh into Dhyan Chand.

His international career ran from 1926 to 1949. He played 185 international matches and scored 570 goals in those matches as recorded in his autobiography, titled Goal. Including domestic and other matches, his total is often placed at more than 1,000 goals. After retirement, he taught coaching at Mount Abu and served as chief coach at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala. The government honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 1956, the third highest civilian honour at that time. He died on 3 December 1979 in New Delhi.

Three Olympic Golds That Defined an Era

Dhyan Chand was the central figure in India winning its first hat trick of Olympic gold medals in hockey. India also remained the dominant force in the sport for decades after that, winning the hockey title in seven of eight Olympics from 1928 to 1964.

Olympic GamesRole and Result
Amsterdam 1928India won its first Olympic hockey gold by beating the Netherlands 3-0 in the final. Dhyan Chand was the top scorer of the tournament with 14 goals in five matches.
Los Angeles 1932India defended the title by beating the United States 24-1 in the final, a record score at that time. Dhyan Chand scored eight goals in that final, while his brother Roop Singh scored ten. Together they were called the hockey twins.
Berlin 1936Dhyan Chand captained India and led the team to a third straight gold with an 8-1 win over Germany in the final. He scored three goals in the final and finished with 11 goals in five matches. In total, he scored 37 goals in 12 Olympic matches across the three editions.

These performances made India a global power in hockey before Independence and inspired later generations. A famous story says officials once checked his stick because they could not believe his control of the ball. Another story says German leader Adolf Hitler offered him a senior post in the German Army after watching him in Berlin, an offer he refused. Such stories may be partly legend, but they show the awe he created around the world.

How Is National Sports Day Celebrated Across India?

National Sports Day is led by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through the Fit India Mission and the Sports Authority of India (SAI). The core idea is simple. Pay tribute to Dhyan Chand in the morning, take a fitness pledge, and then spend at least one hour playing a sport. The Fit India Pledge commits a person to devote time every day to physical activity and to encourage family members to do the same.

In recent years the one day event has been expanded into a three day national movement. Schools, colleges, universities, youth clubs, panchayats, resident welfare associations, public sector units and sports federations all take part. Activities include tributes and marches, debates on sports, competitions in modern and traditional games such as kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball, tug of war and sack race, and mass cycling rallies under Fit India Sundays on Cycle. Institutions track participation through the Fit India mobile app. The University Grants Commission (UGC) also asks higher education institutions to hold campus sports and fitness events during this period.

One of the biggest milestones linked to the day came on 29 August 2019, when the Fit India Movement was launched in New Delhi to make fitness a daily habit and a peoples movement. The movement promotes easy physical activity, awareness about lifestyle diseases, indigenous sports and fitness programmes in schools, villages and panchayats.

National Sports Day Themes for 2025 and 2026

A theme is announced each year to give a common message to all events. The theme helps schools and districts plan activities around one idea.

YearTheme and Campaign
2025Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main, which means one hour on the playground. Celebrations ran from 29 to 31 August as a three day fitness movement. Day one focused on tributes and one hour of play, day two on indigenous games and fitness talks, and day three on a nationwide cycling drive. The Ministry reported participation by nearly 30 crore citizens across more than 700 districts.
2026Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat, which means when India plays, India wins. Celebrations were planned from 28 to 30 August around three pillars of Tribute, Play and Move. The programme linked sports with Raksha Bandhan through Sports Bandhan activities and closed with cycling and active mobility events.

These themes support a larger goal. India aims to build a strong sporting culture from the grassroots and to strengthen its case to host the 2036 Olympic Games. The new National Sports Policy 2025, also called Khelo Bharat Niti 2025, which replaced the 2001 policy, sets the target of making India a top five sporting nation by 2047. It focuses on talent identification, coaching, sports science, school integration under the National Education Policy 2020 and private investment. The flagship Khelo India programme, with a budget of ₹1,000 crore in 2025-26, runs youth, university, para and winter games and supports more than 2,800 Khelo India athletes through centres and academies across the country.

National Sports Awards Linked to the Day

For many years the National Sports Awards were presented by the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan around National Sports Day, though the ceremony date can now vary. These awards recognise athletes, coaches and organisations for excellence in sport. There are six categories under the awards system.

The highest honour is the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, given for outstanding performance over four years. It was instituted in 1991-92 and first awarded to chess champion Viswanathan Anand. It was called the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna until 6 August 2021, when it was renamed after Dhyan Chand. Winners receive a medallion, a certificate and a cash prize of ₹25 lakh.

The Arjuna Award, instituted in 1961 and named after Arjuna from the Mahabharata, honours consistent good performance, leadership and discipline over four years. The Dronacharya Award, instituted in 1985 and named after coach Drona, honours coaches who produce medal winners at international events. The Major Dhyan Chand Award, instituted in 2002, honours lifetime achievement in sports. The other two national honours are the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy, given to the best performing university, and the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar, given for promotion and development of sports.

Dhyan Chand’s memory also lives in infrastructure. The Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, near India Gate, was built in 1933 as the Irwin Amphitheatre. It hosted the first Asian Games in 1951 and Dhyan Chand name was added in 2002. It is now managed by the Sports Authority of India and remains the main venue for National Sports Day tributes in the capital.
