The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) has integrated the free digital learning resources of USA-based Saylor University into its NIELIT Digital University (NDU) platform. The collaboration was formally inaugurated on 10 September 2026 in New Delhi in the presence of S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Learners on the NDU platform will now get unified access to more than 160 free, self-paced global courses in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), data science and business management.

The partnership brings Saylor University’s digital courses directly onto the NIELIT Digital University (NDU) platform (ndu.digital). NDU will now act as a single window where Indian learners can access both Indian and international learning material without moving to a separate foreign website.

What Is NIELIT Digital University Platform?
The NIELIT Digital University (NDU) is a national online learning platform developed by NIELIT. It was launched on 2 October 2025 in New Delhi by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology. The stated goal is to make high quality digital education affordable, inclusive and linked to jobs.
NDU focuses on new age technologies where industry demand is high. These include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science, cloud computing, semiconductors, VLSI design and allied fields. VLSI means very large scale integration, the process of placing millions of tiny electronic parts on a single chip. The platform uses virtual labs, which are online copies of real labs that allow students to practise experiments through a computer. It also offers learning in multiple languages, career guidance tools and interview practice modules.
The scale of the platform has grown quickly since its launch. According to official data shared at the time of the Saylor integration, NDU has more than 2.80 lakh registered learners, offers more than 120 courses and has reached learners in all 36 States and Union Territories across 761 districts. The courses include programmes approved by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) and aligned to the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF). NSQF is India’s national scale that fixes the level of skill a course provides. Credits earned on NDU can be transferred through the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), a digital storehouse that keeps a student’s course credits safe and allows colleges to count them toward a degree. The platform supports the goals of Digital India, Skill India and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and aims to reach 40 lakh learners by 2030.
What Will Learners Get From Saylor Integration?
Saylor University offers more than 160 free online courses. All courses are self paced, which means there are no fixed class timings and a learner can study on any device with internet access. On passing the final exam, usually with a score of 70 percent or more, the learner gets a free digital certificate.
For NIELIT students, the recommended Saylor courses fall into two broad groups. The first group covers business and technology skills that add value to a technical degree. The second group covers job readiness skills such as writing and interviews.

What Is Saylor University?
Saylor University, earlier known as Saylor Academy, is a nonprofit online university based in the United States. It was started in 2008 by entrepreneur Michael J. Saylor and works through the Constitution Foundation, a nonprofit body registered in the US under section 501(c)(3). Its office is located in Washington, D.C.
The mission of the university is to make college level study free and open to all. It creates full length courses using free and open study material selected by expert teachers. Till date, more than 23 lakh learners have started courses with Saylor, and the university reports more than 4.86 lakh active learners in India alone.
In March 2026, Saylor Academy received approval from the Florida Commission for Independent Education to operate as Saylor University. In 2026, it also earned international accreditation from the Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges and Universities (ASIC), a global quality body based in the United Kingdom. Accreditation means an outside agency has checked the quality of teaching and systems. Saylor is also accredited by the International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) of the US.
Saylor launched its first graduate degree, a Master of Business Administration (MBA), in 2024. In 2025, it added three more tuition free master’s programmes in Marketing, Management, and Entrepreneurship and Innovation. NIELIT stands for the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology. It is an autonomous scientific society working under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. It was earlier known as the DOEACC Society, where DOEACC meant Department of Electronics and Accreditation of Computer Courses. Its headquarters is at NIELIT Bhawan, Dwarka, New Delhi.
NIELIT works in the field of Information, Electronics and Communications Technology (IECT). It runs both formal courses such as B.Tech, M.Tech and MCA, and non formal short term courses. At the same event in New Delhi, NIELIT exchanged Memoranda of Understanding, or MoUs, with eight partner organisations from industry, industry bodies and academia. An MoU is a written understanding where two sides agree to work together on shared goals.

These MoUs aim to expand industry linked skilling, joint certification, faculty training, internships and digital learning through the NDU platform. They follow earlier NDU partnerships signed at the time of launch with Microsoft, Zscaler, Dixon Tech and others. S. Krishnan said such tie ups help match classroom training with real industry needs and strengthen links between colleges and companies.

A student in a small town can now study the same AI or data science basics that a learner in another country studies, along with NIELIT’s job oriented Indian courses.
