Veteran filmmaker Singeetam Srinivasa Rao died at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai on the night of 3 October 2026 at the age of 94 after treatment for age related ailments. His six decade career produced about 60 films in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and English, including the silent classic Pushpaka Vimana and the time travel epic Aditya 369. His passing closes the journey of one of Indian cinema’s most restless experimenters, who was still directing in his nineties.

Early Life and Entry Into Cinema

Singeetam Srinivasa Rao was born on 21 September 1931 in Gudur, in present day Andhra Pradesh, which was then part of the Madras Presidency under British rule. He studied at the University of Madras and entered films as an assistant to the respected director K. V. Reddy. In that role, Singeetam worked on the all time Telugu classics Mayabazar (1957) and Jagadeka Veeruni Katha (1961).

The training shaped him. K. V. Reddy was known for careful planning, strong visuals and clean humour. Singeetam absorbed those habits and added his own curiosity about science, fantasy and social themes.

Singeetam made his directorial debut with the Telugu film Neethi Nijayithi (1972). The film earned critical praise but did not succeed at the box office. He did not retreat into safe formulas. Instead he moved toward stories about caste, poverty and women’s lives, which soon brought him national recognition.

What Were His National Awards and Major Honours?

Singeetam Srinivasa Rao won two National Film Awards, the first in 1973 for the Tamil film Dikkatra Parvathi and the second in 1988 for Pushpaka Vimana, and the Film Federation of India gave him its Life Achievement Award in 2011. Dikkatra Parvathi won Best Feature Film in Tamil. Pushpaka Vimana won Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment as a Kannada entry.

The National Film Awards are India’s top film honours. They were set up in 1954 and are administered by the Directorate of Film Festivals under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Singeetam’s first win came early. Dikkatra Parvathi (1974), starring Srikanth and Lakshmi, dealt with social oppression and won both the National Award and the Filmfare Award for Best Film in Tamil.

His second National Award marked a very different achievement. Pushpaka Vimana (1987) had no dialogues yet it entertained audiences across languages. The jury recognised it as popular cinema with high craft.

The Film Federation of India (FFI) is the apex body of Indian film producers, distributors and exhibitors. It was founded in 1951 and is based in Mumbai. FFI also selects India’s official entry to the Academy Awards. FFI presented Singeetam with its Life Achievement Award in 2011 at the 4th Global Film Festival in Noida for crossing language barriers and handling humane subjects with rare range.

His wider shelf of honours shows the same breadth.

Mayuri (1985), a dance based biographical drama, won a record 14 Nandi Awards. That record made the film a landmark in Telugu cinema history.

Pushpaka Vimana: The Landmark Silent Film

Pushpaka Vimana, released in 1987 and widely called Pushpak, is a dialogue free black comedy directed, scripted and co produced by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao. The film stars Kamal Haasan as an unemployed graduate who quietly takes over the life of a drunk rich man, which pulls him into a chain of funny and tense situations. The film uses only music and sound effects, with no spoken lines.

Singeetam co produced the film with actor Shringar Nagaraj, a relative of Kannada star Rajkumar. Cinematographer B. C. Gowrishankar shot the film. The team proved that a star vehicle could work without language. Singeetam himself later said a Kamal Haasan film without language was more commercial than a film tied to one language, because it could run everywhere.

The experiment succeeded. Pushpaka Vimana won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment in 1988. It received a special mention at the Shanghai Film Festival and found a place in lists of the hundred greatest Indian films. The film was entered as a Kannada film even though it had no language, and it remains India’s best known silent film of the sound era.

Aditya 369: The Time Machine Classic

Aditya 369, released in 1991, is a Telugu science fiction film directed and co written by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao. The film stars Nandamuri Balakrishna in a double role with Mohini in the lead. A time machine named Aditya 369 carries the heroes from the present to the Vijayanagara Empire of King Krishnadevaraya in the past and then to a damaged future.

The film blended adventure, comedy and history. It explained time travel in simple terms, through a machine that moves people across centuries. The past portions recreated the court of Sri Krishnadevaraya, who ruled Vijayanagara in the early 1500s, while the future portions warned about misuse of science.

Aditya 369 became one of the highest grossing Telugu films of 1991, with reported earnings of about ₹9 crore. Critics now treat it as the first major time travel film in Telugu and a landmark of Indian science fiction. A proposed sequel called Aditya 999 was discussed but never made.

Partnership With Kamal Haasan: Apoorva Sagodharargal and Michael Madana Kama Rajan

Singeetam Srinivasa Rao and Kamal Haasan worked together on seven films, a partnership that shaped modern South Indian comedy. Their run began with the Telugu action comedy Sommokadidhi Sokokadidhi (1979) and included Raja Paarvai (1981), which was Kamal Haasan’s 100th film. The collaboration mixed technical daring with mass humour.

Apoorva Sagodharargal, released in 1989 in Tamil, cast Kamal Haasan in a triple role. One of the roles was Appu, a circus performer with dwarfism who seeks revenge for his father’s death. The story was written by Panchu Arunachalam, with screenplay by Kamal Haasan and dialogues by Crazy Mohan. The team created the dwarf effect with folded knees, special shoes, dug trenches for side shots and careful make up. The film won the Filmfare Award for Best Film in Tamil and was screened at the International Film Festival of India.

Michael Madana Kama Rajan, released in 1990 in Tamil, took the same spirit further. Kamal Haasan played four lookalike brothers separated at birth who meet again as adults. The screenplay was by Kamal Haasan and the dialogues were by Crazy Mohan. Art director Peketi Ranga and cinematographer B. C. Gowrishankar, both regulars from Rajkumar’s Kannada films, handled design and camera. The film became an instant hit and is still counted among the finest Tamil comedies.

Later, the duo made Magalir Mattum (1994), Kadhala Kadhala (1998) and Mumbai Xpress (2005). Kamal Haasan’s company Raaj Kamal Films International later hosted a retrospective titled Apoorva Singeetham to honour the director.

Work Across Five Languages and Complete Movies List

Singeetam Srinivasa Rao directed about 60 films in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and English. He also worked at times as writer, producer, composer and actor. Few Indian directors moved so freely between languages and genres, from social dramas to fantasy, mythology and science fiction.

In Telugu, his notable films include America Ammayi (1976), Panthulamma (1978), Mayuri (1985), America Abbayi (1987), Aditya 369 (1991), Brundavanam (1992), Bhairava Dweepam (1994) and Madam (1994). Bhairava Dweepam, a folklore fantasy with Balakrishna, won him the Nandi Award for Best Director and stands with Aditya 369 as a genre landmark. He also made three films with Balakrishna, including the mythological Sri Krishnarjuna Vijayam (1996).

In Kannada, Singeetam directed seven consecutive hits with superstar Dr. Rajkumar, starting with Haalu Jenu (1982). The run included Chalisuva Modagalu (1982), Eradu Nakshatragalu (1983), Shravana Banthu (1984), Jwaalamukhi (1985), Bhagyada Lakshmi Baramma (1986) and Devatha Manushya (1988), which was Rajkumar’s 200th film. He composed music for two of his own films and helped launch Rajkumar’s sons Shiva Rajkumar and Raghavendra Rajkumar.

His Hindi work included Phool (1993) and the English language animation project Son of Aladdin (2003). He also directed the children’s fantasy Ghatothkach, Master of Magic (2008). The table below lists his most recalled titles for quick revision.

What Is Singeetham, the Final Film of 2026?

Sing Geetham is a 2026 Telugu musical fantasy directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao in which every villager speaks only through song after a curse linked to cutting a sacred tree. It stars Ayaan Khan, Ahilya Bamroo and Shalini Kondepudi, with music by Devi Sri Prasad.

The film, billed as SSR61, marked Singeetam’s return to direction after about ten years. Producer Nag Ashwin of Vyjayanthi Movies and Swapna Cinema backed the project, with presentation by C. Aswini Dutt. The story follows a young man named Prathap who reaches a remote village called Kubera Puram in search of work. The village has cut its last surviving tree to expand mining and faces a curse. Redemption comes through introspection and living in harmony with nature.

The form is unusual. This is not a regular film with songs placed between scenes. Dialogue itself dissolves into song, so characters sing their conversations. Singeetam had carried the idea for nearly forty years, since a discussion with Kamal Haasan before Pushpaka Vimana. Composer Devi Sri Prasad took about a year to shape the sung dialogue, while actors trained to act and sing with natural timing.

Age did not stop the shoot. At 94, Singeetam often directed remotely from his home through a virtual monitor, supported on the floor by executive director Sankalp Gora and writers Gautami Challagulla, Nanda Kishore Emani and others. The shoot ran for 77 to 78 working days in Chennai and Hyderabad on a budget of about ₹22 crore. Sing Geetham released in theatres on 12 June 2026 with a runtime of 137 minutes and received positive reviews for its environmental message and playful tone.

The spelling needs a note. The veteran’s family name is often written as both Singeetam and Singeetham, and the 2026 film is titled Sing Geetham. All three refer to the same director. A veteran filmmaker means a director with very long experience, and Singeetam, active from 1972 to 2026, fitted that word in full.
