What Is the AK-203 Sher Rifle?
The AK-203 Sher is a modern assault rifle from the Kalashnikov family, originally designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov and developed by Kalashnikov Concern in Russia between 2007 and 2010. AK stands for Avtomat Kalashnikova, meaning Kalashnikov automatic rifle, and 203 denotes its model in the 200 series which modernizes the earlier AK-100 series. The rifle is chambered for the 7.62x39mm intermediate cartridge and is known in India by its nickname Sher, which means lion.
It is a gas operated, rotating bolt rifle with select fire capability, meaning it can fire in single shot and full automatic modes. AK-203 vs INSAS: Why a Replacement Was Needed
The Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) is a family of rifles and light machine guns developed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune in the 1980s and inducted from 1998. It was designed to replace the 7.62x51mm Self Loading Rifle (SLR) and the .303 Lee Enfield and was chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO. Unlike the fast but lighter 5.56mm family, the AK-203 uses the intermediate 7.62x39mm cartridge which retains energy and penetration at medium distances.
