Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia launched the revamped Dak Sewa and Dak MITRA (Mobile Interface for Transactions and Rural Assistance) apps of the Department of Posts (DoP) at Rang Bhavan in New Delhi on 24 August 2026, alongside Minister of State Dr Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani. The two India Post new apps are designed to make parcel tracking, booking and banking services available on mobile phones and to strengthen last-mile delivery through more than 1.4 lakh Branch Post Offices. At the same event, the ministers inaugurated 14 renovated post office buildings across 10 states as part of a wider modernisation of both digital and physical postal infrastructure.
What Are Dak Sewa and Dak MITRA Apps?
Dak Sewa is the citizen facing mobile application of the Department of Posts, which functions under the Ministry of Communications and is headquartered at Dak Bhawan, Sansad Marg, New Delhi. The word Sewa means service, and the app brings together multiple postal services on a single screen so that citizens do not have to visit different counters or portals. It is available for download on Android and iOS, and the revamped version offers 24x7 access to services such as India Post tracking, article booking, complaints and calculators.
Dak MITRA stands for Mobile Interface for Transactions and Rural Assistance. It was earlier known as the DREAM app and was renamed to DAK MITRA in August 2026 on approval of the competent authority. Unlike Dak Sewa, Dak MITRA is an operational platform for postal staff, especially Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) and Branch Postmasters. It is deployed on Android based handheld devices and works as a unified, paperless system for more than 1.4 lakh Branch Post Offices, out of India Post’s total network of about 1.65 lakh post offices, the largest postal network in the world. India Post itself traces its institutional history to 1 October 1854 and today operates as a statutory body under the Ministry of Communications.
Both apps were developed indigenously by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT), which is based in Mysuru, Karnataka and also has a centre in Bengaluru, under the Advanced Postal Technology (APT) platform. APT is the core of the DoP IT 2.0 modernisation project.
How Dak Sewa and Dak MITRA Differ: Citizen Platform vs Operational Platform
The two apps look similar in name but serve two different users. Dak Sewa is for customers, Dak MITRA is for the postman who serves them. Together they are described by the government as two sides of the same coin.
| Feature | Dak Sewa | Dak MITRA |
|---|---|---|
| Primary users | Citizens and customers | Gramin Dak Sevaks and Branch Postmasters |
| Purpose | Access postal services digitally | Manage postal and financial operations digitally |
| Nature | Customer facing app | Employee and operational platform |
| India Post tracking | Real time tracking of Speed Post, parcels and articles | Supports delivery with OTP based confirmation and real time updates |
| Post office locator and PIN code search | Yes, with map integration | Not applicable, operational tool |
| Booking of articles | Citizens can book and request doorstep pickup | Branch Postmasters book articles and process them in real time |
| Financial and insurance services | Information and access to Post Office Savings Bank, PLI and RPLI, calculators and premium payment | Executes Core Banking Services, cash deposit and withdrawal, Aadhaar based e-KYC, PLI and RPLI premium collection at doorstep |
| Languages | 23 Indian languages through BHASHINI | Operational interface for staff |
| Coverage | Pan India for all users | More than 1.4 lakh Branch Post Offices |
In simple terms, a customer uses Dak Sewa to request a service, and the Gramin Dak Sevak uses Dak MITRA to deliver that service at the doorstep.
Key Features of Dak Sewa and Dak MITRA Apps
Dak Sewa App: 23 Languages and 24x7 Citizen Services
Dak Sewa answers the high volume search queries around dak sewa app download, login, tracking and features. The revamped app was piloted in June 2025 and crossed nearly 10 lakh downloads by August 2026. During the pilot, customers booked more than 91.3 lakh mails and parcels through the app, and in a later update the figure was reported at about 99 lakh parcels. The government has described the platform as the foundation for a future Super App for India Post.
Key services available on Dak Sewa include article and consignment tracking for domestic and international mail, including Speed Post tracking, with status updates, Post Office search and PIN code locator with an option to view offices on a map and call the office, and calculators for postage, savings schemes and premiums for Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI). Citizens can book Speed Post and parcels with a doorstep pickup request and use integrated domestic and international booking. The app also allows complaint and grievance registration with tracking and alerts, supports digital payments through UPI, internet banking and cards and QR code based payments with online bill payment through SBI ePay, and provides information on Small Savings Schemes such as Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Recurring Deposit, Time Deposit, Monthly Income Scheme, Senior Citizen Savings Scheme, National Savings Certificate and Kisan Vikas Patra, along with insurance products.
A major highlight is language access. The app supports 23 Indian languages through BHASHINI, the AI powered National Language Translation Mission launched in July 2022 at Digital India Week in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. BHASHINI aims to make internet and digital services available in Indian languages through voice and text translation, and it helps break literacy and language barriers for users in rural areas.
Citizens can download the app from the Google Play Store as Dak Sewa and log in using the customer ID. Common queries such as what is customer ID in Dak Sewa app, how to register, and how to use the app are addressed inside the app’s help section and through the Post Office locator and chatbot support.
Dak MITRA App: Powering 1.4 Lakh Branch Post Offices
Dak MITRA answers the operational need behind last mile delivery. The upgraded version was soft launched in May 2025 and is now operational in almost 90 percent of Branch Post Offices. Since May 2025, it has enabled about 2.45 crore Speed Post and parcel bookings, facilitated delivery of about 15.09 crore articles, and collected ₹5,431 crore in insurance premiums.
The app enables Branch Postmasters to work paperless and in real time. Its functions include mail booking, OTP based doorstep delivery with digital signature capture, Core Banking Services, insurance services, Aadhaar based biometric e-KYC, cash deposits and withdrawals without pay in slips, and PLI and RPLI premium collection at customers’ doorsteps. It also supports conversion of customers through e-KYC and integration with handheld devices through dynamic QR code for payments. Because it runs on the APT platform and is hosted on the government’s MeghRaj 2.0 cloud with connectivity support from BSNL, even remote rural post offices can update delivery status instantly.
Inside the Technology: CEPT, APT and DoP IT 2.0
The upgrade is part of a larger technology shift, not just two new apps. The Information Technology Modernisation Project 2.0 (DoP IT 2.0) was approved with an outlay of ₹5,785 crore for eight years starting 2022-23, as a successor to DoP IT 1.0. Its centrepiece is the Advanced Postal Technology (APT), a new indigenous Postal and Logistics Solution developed by CEPT.
CEPT, the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology, functions as the in house technology arm of the Department of Posts. Under APT, the Department has completed rollout across all 1.64 lakh post offices, enabling faster, more secure services and QR code based digital payments. The APT stack uses modern tools such as React, Flutter, Golang, Java Spring Boot, Python for AI and ML, PostgreSQL and other databases, and cloud native deployment with Kubernetes and Docker, as listed in CEPT’s 2026 willingness notification for 70 new positions.
APT also replaced older isolated systems with an interconnected ecosystem that gives a single window view of postal and financial services through multiple channels. The earlier Internal Mobile App (IMA), which captured digital signatures and enabled real time delivery updates, has now evolved into the more comprehensive Dak MITRA. Officials have said the transformation rests on four pillars, technology upgrade, policy reform, organisational change, and modern physical infrastructure. This is also aligned with the government’s visions of Digital India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat.
14 Renovated Post Offices Across 10 States: Modernising Physical Infrastructure
Along with software, the government inaugurated hardware. 14 renovated post office buildings across 10 states were opened virtually from Rang Bhavan. This is part of a proof of concept project undertaken with the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi, which prepared a Design Manual for post offices.
The Design Manual is guided by four core principles, identity as a public service, citizen centric service delivery, future readiness through technology and innovation, and standardisation with flexibility for local adaptation. It uses a five zone spatial framework, Urban Interface Zone, Open Access Forecourt, Open Access Services, Service and Transaction Zone, and Staff Zones, to improve accessibility, movement and operational efficiency.
Under the proof of concept, 40 post offices across 17 states were selected for transformation. Of these, 27 have been completed, including four inaugurated earlier and the 14 opened on 24 August 2026. The remaining offices in this phase are targeted for completion by 31 August 2026, and the Department proposes to extend the programme to an additional 60 post offices in the current financial year.
The 14 newly inaugurated post offices are:
| Post Office | State or City |
|---|---|
| Patliputra | Bihar |
| Vasant Kunj | Delhi |
| Sector-56, Gurugram | Haryana |
| Kakurgachi | West Bengal (Kolkata) |
| Vidisha | Madhya Pradesh |
| Sanchi | Madhya Pradesh |
| Shillong | Meghalaya |
| Kandivali West | Maharashtra (Mumbai) |
| Shankar Nagar, Nagpur | Maharashtra |
| Ayodhya Nagar, Nagpur | Maharashtra |
| Nirala Nagar, Lucknow | Uttar Pradesh |
| Gomti Nagar, Lucknow | Uttar Pradesh |
| Indira Nagar, Lucknow | Uttar Pradesh |
| Prayagraj | Uttar Pradesh |
The renovated buildings feature a distinctive India Post identity, improved signage, citizen centric layouts, dedicated service areas, and technology enabled facilities. Where feasible, they include 24x7 Sewa facilities, ATMs, after hours booking and smart parcel services, along with improved seating and accessible counters.
Why This Modernisation Matters for Last-Mile Delivery and Financial Inclusion
India Post handles more than mail. With over 1.55 lakh to 1.65 lakh post offices, including about 1.49 lakh in rural areas, it is the world’s most widely distributed postal network. It acts as an agent for the government in delivery of MGNREGS wage disbursement and old age pensions, provides access to Small Savings Schemes, and offers life insurance through PLI, introduced on 1 February 1884 as the oldest life insurer in India, and RPLI, introduced on 24 March 1995 for the rural population.
For citizens, the Dak Sewa app reduces the need to visit a post office to book a parcel, track a Speed Post article, pay a premium, or find a PIN code. For the Department, Dak MITRA reduces paperwork, enables real time updates, and allows Gramin Dak Sevaks to offer banking and insurance at the doorstep through handheld devices. This directly supports financial inclusion, as many rural customers access Post Office Savings Bank accounts, PLI and RPLI and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) services through the post office network.
The modernisation also sharpens competitiveness. Private couriers such as DTDC, Delhivery, Blue Dart, FedEx and Shiprocket compete on speed and tracking, but India Post retains the deepest rural reach. By adding app based pickup, integrated domestic and international booking, and digital payments via UPI and QR codes, India Post aims to combine its traditional trust with modern convenience. Minister Scindia noted that citizens now expect services on their mobile phones at the touch of a button, and the Department’s task is not only to digitise old processes but to redesign the process around the citizen.
This initiative connects three important themes, Digital India and language inclusion through BHASHINI, financial inclusion through IPPB, PLI and RPLI, and logistics reform through APT and DoP IT 2.0.
The Way Forward
The Department has indicated that the current launch is not the final stage. Dak Sewa is being positioned as a single entry point that will steadily integrate more postal, insurance and financial services. The Minister of State described it as the beginning of a Super App for India Post. On the infrastructure side, after completing the initial 40 post offices under the SPA Design Manual, the plan is to renovate 60 more post offices during 2026-27, based on learnings from the proof of concept.
Operationally, the focus will be on driving adoption of Dak MITRA across all Branch Post Offices, ensuring stable connectivity through BSNL, and expanding digital payment options. The success indicators already cited, nearly 10 lakh Dak Sewa downloads and 15.09 crore article deliveries through Dak MITRA, will be watched for further growth as the apps move beyond the pilot phase to full national scale.
