The third edition of Exercise Mountain Guardian 2026 between the Indian Army and the UAE Land Forces began on 5 October 2026 at the Foreign Training Node in Chaubatia, Uttarakhand. The two week drill, scheduled till 18 October 2026, brings 46 Indian troops from a Bhairav Battalion and 46 UAE troops from a Mountain Infantry Battalion together for mountain warfare training. The exercise shifts India UAE army cooperation from deserts to high mountains and puts a new Indian light commando force to test alongside deepening defence ties.

What Is Exercise Mountain Guardian 2026?

Exercise Mountain Guardian 2026 is the third edition of the bilateral army exercise between India and the United Arab Emirates focused on mountain warfare. The 2026 edition is held from 5 to 18 October 2026 at Chaubatia in Uttarakhand with 92 soldiers participating in equal numbers from both sides.

The Indian Army has stated that the 14 day schedule centres on joint planning, tactical drills, handling of equipment and integrated field exercises using modern technology. The stated aim is to improve interoperability, which means the ability of two armies to plan, communicate and fight together smoothly. The focus is on sub-conventional operations, which refer to low intensity conflicts such as counter terrorism and counter insurgency actions that fall below full scale conventional war.

The opening ceremony for Exercise Mountain Guardian 2026 was held at the Foreign Training Node on 5 October 2026. Women officers and combatants from both armies are taking part in specialist roles during this edition. The Indian Army has linked the drill directly to stronger military to military cooperation, friendship and trust between India and the UAE.

Indian Contingent Profile and Bhairav Battalion Role

The Indian contingent in Exercise Mountain Guardian 2026 comes from a Bhairav Battalion. The choice is important because Bhairav units are the newest fighting arm of the Indian Army and this is among their first outings in a foreign joint exercise in mountain terrain.

What Is Bhairav Battalion in the Indian Army?

The Bhairav Battalion, also called the Bhairav Light Commando Battalion, is a compact commando unit of about 250 soldiers that fills the gap between regular infantry and Para Special Forces. The name Bhairav comes from the fierce form of Lord Shiva and reflects controlled aggression.

The Bhairav concept was announced by Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi (as of October 2026) on 26 July 2025 during the Kargil Vijay Diwas function at Dras in Ladakh. The idea grew from lessons of recent conflicts and Operation Sindoor, which showed the need for small, fast and technology heavy teams under local commanders. A standard infantry battalion has about 800 soldiers. A Bhairav battalion keeps only about 250 handpicked soldiers so it can move fast, strike with surprise and hold difficult ground.

Each Bhairav battalion mixes infantry soldiers with small elements from artillery, air defence and signals. Every soldier is trained in basic drone operation and each battalion has a dedicated Ashni platoon for drones and loitering munitions, which are small flying weapons that wait in the air and then hit the target. Weapons include AK-203 rifles, close quarter carbines, machine guns, mortars and anti tank guided missiles. Tasks include deep reconnaissance, which means secret tracking of enemy movement, targeted raids, border response, surveillance and disruption of enemy posts at tactical depth.

By early 2026, about 15 Bhairav battalions were functional with a plan to reach 25 battalions. Some follow the sons of the soil method, where soldiers serve in regions they know well, which helps with language, climate and terrain. The 4 Bhairav Battalion of the Sikh Light Infantry and the 6 Bhairav Battalion made their public parade debut on Republic Day on 26 January 2026. The Army places Bhairav units under Corps and Division commanders and links them to Rudra Brigades, which are new all arms brigades with armour, artillery, engineers and unmanned systems.

UAE Contingent, Venue and Training Activities at Chaubatia

The UAE contingent in Exercise Mountain Guardian 2026 comes from a Mountain Infantry Battalion of the UAE Land Forces. The contingent has 46 personnel. It is paired with 46 Indian personnel, taking the total strength to 92 personnel with equal representation from both armies.

The venue is the Foreign Training Node at Chaubatia near Ranikhet in Uttarakhand. Foreign Training Nodes are special Army training centres built to host foreign troops for joint exercises. Chaubatia offers steep slopes, narrow ridges, cold weather and thin air. These conditions test movement, firing and rescue in a way that flat desert ranges cannot. Uttarakhand also hosts the Surya Foreign Training Node at Auli, which sits at a height of more than 9,500 feet about 100 km from the Line of Actual Control and has hosted exercises such as Yudh Abhyas with the United States and KAZIND with Kazakhstan.

The 2026 training plan focuses on mountain skills and modern tools. Troops start with joint planning, where officers from both sides make a common battle plan, and then move to field practice. Firing practice sharpens weapon handling at altitude where bullet paths and stamina change. The establishment of surveillance grids teaches soldiers to link observation posts, cameras and sensors into one watch network. Drone operations cover both spying and strike roles.

Training ActivityWhat Troops Practise
Joint planning and tactical drillsCommon orders, movement in files and sections on slopes
Firing practices and equipment handlingSmall arms firing, adjustment for height and cold
Surveillance grids and drone operationsSensor watch, drone flights, data sharing
Rock climbing and obstacle trainingClimbing, rappelling, crossing hurdles with load
Physical endurance and integrated field exerciseLong marches, night moves, full mission rehearsal

The exchange of tactics, techniques and procedures forms the core learning. The Indian side shares experience in high altitude deployment in the Himalayas. The UAE side brings its own strengths in technology use and joint operations. Rock climbing and obstacle courses build the confidence to carry weapons, radios and medical kits across cliffs and streams.

Exercise Mountain Guardian 2026 is part of a wider set of joint military exercises of India with the UAE. Each service holds its own separate exercise. The Army trains in Desert Cyclone and Mountain Guardian. The Air Force trains in Desert Eagle. The Navy trains in Zayed Talwar. Together these drills cover land, air and sea.

What Is Desert Cyclone and Which Countries Participate in It?

Desert Cyclone is the bilateral army exercise between India and the UAE. The exercise focuses on sub-conventional operations in desert and semi desert terrain, especially fighting in built up areas, which means combat inside towns and buildings. The first edition, Desert Cyclone 2024, was held from 2 to 15 January 2024 at Mahajan in Rajasthan with 45 personnel from each side. The Indian side was drawn mainly from the Mechanised Infantry Regiment and the UAE side was drawn from the Zayed First Brigade. Drills included a joint surveillance centre, cordon and search, domination of built up areas and heliborne operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter on peacekeeping. The second edition, Desert Cyclone II, was held from 18 to 30 December 2025 at Abu Dhabi in the UAE.

Mountain Guardian takes the same partnership from desert to mountains. Desert Cyclone builds skill in heat, sand and urban lanes. Mountain Guardian builds skill in cold, height and slopes. The shift gives both armies a complete range of ground experience.

Desert Eagle and Zayed Talwar: Air and Naval Exercises

Desert Eagle is the bilateral air exercise between India and the UAE. The first edition was held in 2008. The second edition, Desert Eagle II, was held from 22 May to 3 June 2016 at Al Dhafra Air Base in Abu Dhabi. The Indian Air Force flew Su-30 MKI fighters while the UAE Air Force flew Mirage 2000-9 and F-16 Block 60 jets. The focus was air combat, joint flying and sharing of best practices.

Zayed Talwar is the bilateral naval exercise between India and the UAE. The 2021 edition, Zayed Talwar 2021, was held on 7 August 2021 off Abu Dhabi with INS Kochi and helicopters on the Indian side and the Al Dhafra Baynunah class corvette on the UAE side. The 2023 edition saw INS Visakhapatnam and INS Trikand visit Port Rashid in Dubai from 8 to 11 August 2023 for cross training in tactics and maritime operations. Subjects included tactical manoeuvres, search and rescue and electronic warfare.

India UAE Defence Cooperation Framework

The India UAE defence relationship sits inside the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed in 2017. The partnership covers trade, energy, technology, education and people to people links. Defence was the slowest pillar to grow. It has now become the most active pillar.

On 19 January 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan signed a Letter of Intent towards a Strategic Defence Partnership. The Letter of Intent is a written promise to conclude a formal pact. The proposed framework covers defence industry work, joint production, innovation, training, doctrine, special operations, cyber space and counter terrorism. In May 2026, the two defence ministries agreed on the framework for this partnership during talks in Abu Dhabi.

Trade and investment give weight to the defence push. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which is a free trade pact, was signed in 2022. Bilateral trade reached $100 billion in 2024-25 and both sides set a target of $200 billion by 2032. The Bilateral Investment Treaty signed in 2024 protects cross border investments. The UAE capital is Abu Dhabi. About 4.3 million Indians live in the UAE, which makes the safety of sea lanes and air routes a shared interest. Energy links include long term LNG supply and crude storage at Fujairah in the UAE.

Recent staff level contacts show steady momentum. The 10th India UAE Navy Staff Talks were held in Abu Dhabi and the air force chiefs met in September 2026. Army Chief visits and commander level exchanges in late 2025 prepared the ground for Desert Cyclone II and Mountain Guardian 2026. Industry forums have pushed joint work in small arms, drones, secure communications and naval platforms.

Significance and The Way Forward

Mountain warfare needs special training. Soldiers carry heavy loads with less oxygen. Weather changes fast. Roads are few. Rescue is hard. A unit that fights well in plains can fail in mountains without practice in climbing, cold survival and high altitude firing. Exercise Mountain Guardian 2026 fills this gap for both sides. India brings long Himalayan experience from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh. The UAE gains exposure that it cannot get in its own desert terrain.

For India, the drill validates the Bhairav model in a multinational setting. Success at Chaubatia will show that a 250 soldier team with drones, signals and air defence support can plan and fight with a foreign partner. For the UAE Land Forces, the drill builds a small mountain core that can later train other units at home.

The way forward is clear from official statements. Both armies want more technology enabled training, more mission rehearsals and deeper sharing of procedures. The Strategic Defence Partnership, once concluded, will add joint industry projects to joint field training. The next steps to watch are the formal signing of that partnership, the fourth Mountain Guardian edition and whether Bhairav units feature in other foreign exercises.
