What Is Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate (PPT ATH)?

Aluminium Trihydrate (ATH) is the common industrial name for the chemical compound aluminium hydroxide, with the formula Al(OH)3. It is a fine, white, odourless powder produced as a refined intermediate during alumina refining. ATH contains roughly 35% water of crystallisation by weight, and this bound water is the reason the material behaves the way it does under heat.

There are two broad families of ATH used in industry. The first is ground or coarse hydrate, made by simply milling the natural hydrate crystals. The second is precipitated ATH, made by carefully controlled chemical precipitation that yields extremely fine, uniform particles with very low impurity levels. Superfine Precipitated ATH (PPT ATH) sits at the top of this family. The particles are typically only 1 to 2 microns across, far smaller than ground grades, which gives them a much higher surface area and better dispersion inside polymer matrices.

That tiny particle size matters because PPT ATH is not sold as a bulk commodity. It is a functional additive, a specialty ingredient that buyers blend into other materials to give them specific fire-safe properties. Until the Belagavi plant came online, India imported every kilogram of this superfine grade used by domestic cable, insulation and coating manufacturers.

How ATH Works as a Halogen-Free Flame Retardant

ATH is the most widely used flame retardant in the world. Its effectiveness comes from chemistry, not chemistry tricks. When ATH is heated to around 200°C, the bound water inside it begins to break free. By roughly 205°C, ATH has released almost all of its 35% water of crystallisation as steam, while the aluminium itself converts to aluminium oxide (Al2O3).

This single reaction delivers three firefighting effects at once. First, the breakdown is endothermic, meaning it absorbs heat. Pulling heat out of a fire is the simplest way to cool it. Second, the released steam dilutes the flammable gases and oxygen around the flame, starving the fire of fuel. Third, the solid aluminium oxide residue left behind forms a protective ceramic-like layer on the surface of the polymer, blocking further heat and oxygen from reaching the material underneath.

The chemical equation is simple: 2 Al(OH)3 -> Al2O3 + 3 H2O, absorbing about 1.3 kJ of heat per gram. For comparison, heating 1.5 grams of ordinary plastic from room temperature to its decomposition point would require almost the same amount of energy. One gram of ATH, in effect, neutralises the thermal energy needed to destroy a chunk of plastic.

This is why ATH is classified as a Halogen-Free Flame Retardant (HFFR). Older flame retardants relied on bromine or chlorine compounds, which smother flames but release toxic halogen acid gases when they burn. These gases are corrosive, can damage electronics and, more critically, are extremely dangerous to humans during a building fire. ATH, by contrast, releases only water vapour. It is non-toxic, non-corrosive, and produces very low smoke, making it the preferred additive for enclosed spaces like metros, airports, hospitals, tunnels, data centres and high-rise residential buildings.

Inside the Belagavi Plant: Capacity, Energy and Investment

The new plant sits inside Hindalco’s existing Belagavi alumina refinery in northern Karnataka, close to the Maharashtra border. The refinery itself has been operational since 1969 and was originally set up to feed metallurgical alumina into Hindalco’s primary aluminium smelters. From the 1980s onwards, it was deliberately repositioned as a 100% specialty alumina facility, the only one of its scale in India today.

The PPT ATH unit has been built with an investment of around ₹400 crore. In its first phase, the facility can produce 30,000 tonnes per annum. The trigger for the next phase will come from a combination of stricter fire-safety enforcement, the rising adoption of electric vehicles, and the construction of new metro rail, airport, hospital and data-centre infrastructure, all of which increasingly require HFFR-grade cabling.

Powered Entirely by Renewables

What makes the Belagavi unit stand out globally is its energy profile. It is the world’s only specialty alumina plant operating entirely on renewable power, drawing 100% of its electricity from biomass, solar and wind sources. The broader Belagavi refinery ran on renewable energy for four continuous months in FY26, a first for an alumina refinery of this size anywhere in the world.

The greenhouse-gas intensity of the operation is correspondingly low. The Belagavi refinery recorded a GHG intensity of 0.44 tCO2e per tonne of alumina on a year-to-date FY26 basis. For comparison, the global average for alumina refining sits well above 1 tCO2e per tonne, which means Belagavi’s footprint is roughly half or less of the industry norm. Hindalco has also eliminated liquid discharge from the site, and even its red mud (bauxite residue) waste is being put to productive use.

The PPT ATH product itself is sold under the InnoSafe brand and is positioned to serve five major application areas: HFFR cables and cable compounds, polymer insulators for high-voltage transmission, thermal insulation foams, composites, and paints and coatings.

Hindalco’s Specialty Alumina Business: The Bigger Picture

The Belagavi PPT ATH plant is the latest move in Hindalco’s deliberate shift from commodity to specialty within its alumina portfolio. Hindalco Industries Limited is the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, one of India’s largest conglomerates. The company was incorporated on 15 December 1958 as Hindustan Aluminium Corporation Limited, in collaboration with Kaiser Aluminium of the United States. It began production at Renukoot in Uttar Pradesh in 1962 and was renamed Hindalco Industries in 1989. Its registered office is in Mumbai, and the company is part of the NSE Nifty 50 index.

Today, Hindalco operates 48 manufacturing facilities across 10 countries and is the world’s largest aluminium company by revenue. Its consolidated turnover stood at around ₹238,496 crore (about $25 billion) in FY25. Through its subsidiary Novelis (acquired in 2007), it is also the world’s largest recycler of aluminium and a leading producer of flat-rolled products used in beverage cans, automobiles and aerospace.

The Specialty Alumina vertical sits within this larger metals empire. Hindalco is India’s largest producer of specialty alumina and currently manufactures more than 120 different grades of non-metallurgical alumina and hydrates across two units: Belagavi in Karnataka and Muri in Jharkhand. Its products reach over 1,000 customers in 42 countries and serve applications ranging from refractories and ceramics to water treatment, batteries, electronics, polishing compounds and display glass for smartphones.

The total specialty alumina capacity at Belagavi and Muri stands at around 460,000 tonnes per annum today. Once these come online, the company’s total specialty alumina capacity will cross 900,000 tonnes per annum. The significance of this plant goes well beyond one factory. It sits at the intersection of three powerful currents shaping Indian manufacturing: stricter fire-safety regulation, the rapid growth of electric mobility and infrastructure, and the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat push to localise critical material supply chains.

Closing a Decade-Long Import Gap

India’s PPT hydrate market has been completely import-dependent, with volumes growing at roughly 10% per year. Until now, Indian cable and insulation manufacturers had to source this high-purity additive from producers in Europe, China and the United States, often with long lead times, unpredictable pricing and limited scope for joint product development. With the Belagavi plant, Hindalco becomes the first and only domestic manufacturer of superfine precipitated ATH, giving Indian buyers a local, predictable, technical-supported source.

Aligning with India’s HFFR Cable Standards

The Indian regulatory framework is increasingly tilting towards HFFR. Electric vehicles carry far heavier electrical loads than conventional cars and operate in tighter, hotter enclosures. Their wiring harnesses demand cables that can withstand higher temperatures and suppress flame and smoke aggressively if anything goes wrong. Hindalco is also expanding its aluminium smelting capacity by 180 KTPA at the Aditya facility in Odisha, scheduled for FY 2027-28, alongside the 850 KTPA Aditya alumina refinery greenfield project.

It demonstrates that complex specialty chemicals, once considered the exclusive preserve of Western and East Asian producers, can be developed and manufactured domestically using an integrated mine-to-market model.
