On 19 and 20 October 2026, the Armament Research and Development Establishment shortlisted SSS Defence and the Kalyani Group as Development cum Production Partners for India’s first indigenous 20 mm aviation gun and turret system. The system will arm the Prachand helicopter and the Rudra armed helicopter built by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd for the Army and Air Force. It will replace the imported THL-20 turret and give India full domestic control over the main gun of its combat helicopter fleet.

What Is the Indigenous 20 mm Aviation Gun and Turret System?

The indigenous 20 mm aviation gun and turret system is India’s first home designed medium calibre gun for combat helicopters. The Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) is designing the gun and its chin mounted turret for integration on HAL’s Advanced Light Helicopter Mk-IV Rudra and Light Combat Helicopter Prachand. A gun turret is a movable mount fixed under the nose of a helicopter that lets the cannon swing and aim independently of the direction of flight.

The project covers both parts as one weapon package. The gun is the 20 mm automatic cannon that fires 20x102 mm ammunition, the standard NATO round also used by the present imported cannon. The turret system includes the cradle, drive motors, ammunition feed, control electronics and link to the helicopter’s sighting and fire control system. Once qualified, the system must work with the pilot’s helmet sight and the electro optical pod so the barrel points exactly where the crew looks.

Why the Rudra and Prachand Need a Homegrown Gun

The Rudra and Prachand fleets currently depend on the imported THL-20 turret built around the French 20M621 cannon. The THL-20 is a light chin turret developed from the THL-30 turret used on Tiger helicopters. It fires the same 20x102 mm round at about 750 rounds per minute and can hit targets at up to 2,000 metres. Its laying is slaved through a databus to the helmet sight and roof mounted sight for high accuracy.

That dependence has become costly as the fleet grows. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd signed a contract on 17 September 2026 with European maker KNDS for 126 newly built THL-20 turrets for the Prachand line. At the same time, the Ministry of Defence signed two contracts on 28 March 2025 with HAL worth ₹62,700 crore for 156 Prachand helicopters, with 66 for the Indian Air Force and 90 for the Indian Army. Deliveries are to start from the third year and spread over five years, with full indigenous content planned at more than 65 percent. A domestic gun is therefore essential to cut import bills, secure spares and upgrades, and lift that indigenous share. The 20 mm turret gun is the core close support weapon of both helicopters. It strikes ground troops, light vehicles, bunkers and low flying threats in direct support of soldiers in combat.

How the Development cum Production Partner Model Works

The Development cum Production Partner (DcPP) model is the Defence Research and Development Organisation system for building complex weapons with industry from the design stage itself. Under this model, ARDE retains design authority while the chosen private firms fund part of development, build prototypes, join trials and then move straight to bulk production. This avoids a fresh production tender after development and shortens the time from drawing board to induction. The same model is already in use for projects such as the Virupaksha AESA radar for the Su-30MKI fleet.

For the 20 mm helicopter gun, ARDE and HAL signed a collaboration Memorandum of Understanding in 2025 to define the interface, weight, recoil and accuracy needs of both helicopters. ARDE then invited bids and shortlisted two partners in October 2026. The development phase is expected to take about two years, followed by ground firing, helicopter integration and acceptance trials. After acceptance, the production order will be split between the two firms on a 60 to 40 basis, with the lower bidder taking the larger share. This twin partner approach keeps supply secure and creates price competition.

Development cum Production Partners: SSS Defence and Kalyani Group

SSS Defence, based in Bengaluru, is the defence arm of Stumpp Schuele and Somappa. The company was set up in 2017 and designs, develops and serially produces small arms in house. Its catalogue covers assault rifles, sniper rifles, submachine guns, carbines and handguns, including the M72, P72 and Viper families. That base in precision firearms, barrels and weapon integration makes the firm a natural fit for a small, light and high vibration aviation cannon.

The Kalyani Group is a Pune based industrial house led by Bharat Forge Ltd. Bharat Forge, a major forging and auto components maker, runs its defence business through its wholly owned subsidiary Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd (KSSL). KSSL builds artillery guns, protected vehicles, ammunition and small arms. It jointly developed the 5.56x45 mm Close Quarter Battle carbine with ARDE, for which the Ministry of Defence placed a ₹1,661.9 crore order for 2,55,128 carbines in December 2025. The group also works on the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) and mounted and ultra light guns in 105 mm and 155 mm calibres. That record in heavy armament, recoil management and large scale manufacture complements the helicopter gun task.

Platform Focus: LCH Prachand Helicopter

The Light Combat Helicopter Prachand is India’s first indigenously designed and developed combat helicopter. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), headquartered in Bengaluru and founded in 1940 as Hindustan Aircraft Ltd, designed the machine with maximum commonality with the Dhruv. Prachand means fierce in Hindi. The twin engine helicopter first flew on 29 March 2010 and entered service with the 143 Helicopter Unit at Jodhpur on 3 October 2022. It is the only attack helicopter in the world cleared to take off and land at about 5,000 metres (16,400 feet), a capability shaped by the Kargil experience where India lacked an armed helicopter for high mountain warfare.

HAL builds the Prachand at its Helicopter Division in Tumakuru, Karnataka. The helicopter has a narrow stealth shaped fuselage, tandem seating for pilot and gunner, armour protection, night attack capability and crashworthy landing gear. Its weapon load includes the 20 mm nose gun, 70 mm rockets, air to air missiles and anti tank guided missiles such as Dhruvastra, with a total external payload of about 1,750 kg. Key parameters include a maximum take off weight of 5,800 kg, maximum speed of about 268 km per hour, range of 550 km and power from two HAL Turbomeca Shakti engines. Fifteen limited series machines are already in service, with ten with the Air Force and five with the Army (as of October 2026).

Is the Prachand Helicopter Made in India?

Yes, the Prachand helicopter is made in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd at Bengaluru and Tumakuru. HAL designed the helicopter, which first flew in 2010 and entered service in 2022. Indigenous content is planned to exceed 65 percent during the current order for 156 helicopters.

The scale explains the urgency of the desi gun. The March 2025 order for 156 helicopters makes the gun requirement large and long term. HAL plans annual output of about 30 machines and completion within five to six years from 2028. An Indian turret ensures steady supply, Indian ammunition tuning and life cycle support inside the country for the full fleet life.

Is Prachand Better Than Apache?

The Prachand helicopter and the Boeing AH-64 Apache serve different roles, so neither is better in every mission. The Apache is a heavier 10 tonne tank killer for plains strike. The Prachand is a lighter 5.8 tonne helicopter built to fight at 5,000 metres.

For Ladakh, Siachen and Arunachal Pradesh, the Prachand holds the edge. For heavy armoured thrusts in the plains, the Apache packs greater firepower. India operates both types as complementary layers rather than substitutes.

Platform Focus: ALH Mk-IV Rudra Helicopter

The Advanced Light Helicopter Mk-IV Rudra, also called ALH-WSI (Weapon Systems Integrated), is the armed version of HAL’s Dhruv utility helicopter. Dhruv means unshakeable in Hindi and Rudra is a name for the storm deity in Indian tradition. HAL developed the Rudra in parallel with the Prachand to give the forces an armed indigenous helicopter quickly. The Mk-III variant carries sensors and electronic warfare suites without full weapons, while the Mk-IV adds the full weapon pack. The type achieved initial operational clearance around 2012 to 2013 and entered service with the Army in February 2013.

The Rudra carries a 20 mm turret gun, 70 mm rocket pods, air to air missiles and anti tank guided missiles, with external stores up to about 900 kg. It retains the utility cabin of the Dhruv, so it can lift troops and cargo while also flying escort, reconnaissance and fire support missions. The cockpit uses the Integrated Architecture Display System (IADS) with multifunction displays, helmet mounted sights, electro optical pod, countermeasure dispensing system and infrared suppressor. That mix makes the Rudra the workhorse armed helicopter for the Army’s pivot corps and for Air Force gunship duties until the larger Prachand fleet arrives.

How Many Rudra Helicopters Are There in India?

India has about 91 Rudra helicopters built, with nearly 90 in service with the Army and Air Force (as of October 2026). The Army flies about 75 Rudra machines, while the Air Force operates the rest. Total Dhruv family production exceeds 330 airframes.

These numbers underline why a common indigenous gun matters. One turret that fits both the Rudra and the Prachand simplifies training, spares and ammunition stocks across two services. The new system will therefore serve a combined fleet of more than 240 gunships when the 156 Prachand order is fully delivered.

ARDE Pune and the Institutional Framework

The Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) is the main armament laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). ARDE stands for Armament Research and Development Establishment and is located at Pashan, Pune in Maharashtra. It was set up in 1958 and moved from Kirkee to Pashan in 1966. It now functions under the Armament and Combat Engineering Systems cluster and employs more than 1,700 scientists, officers and staff. Its mandate covers small arms, artillery guns, rocket systems, air delivered munitions, warheads and fuzes.

ARDE’s record includes the Pinaka multi barrel rocket system, developed with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System, tank armament and high speed low drag bombs. DRDO itself was formed in 1958 by merging the Technical Development Establishments, the Directorate of Technical Development and Production and the Defence Science Organisation. The organisation is headquartered at DRDO Bhavan, New Delhi, and runs a network of about 41 laboratories plus five Young Scientist Laboratories. ARDE’s gun expertise, HAL’s helicopter integration lead and private DcPP production capacity together form the triangle behind the present project.

The Way Forward

The two year development window will test whether Indian industry can master a light, low recoil aviation cannon that holds accuracy under severe vibration, dust and temperature swings. ARDE will have to freeze weight below the limits of the chin station, prove a jam free feed for 20x102 mm rounds and demonstrate precise slaving to helmet and electro optical sights. Successful ground and flight trials on both the Rudra and Prachand will decide acceptance.

If trials succeed, the 60 to 40 production split will create two domestic supply lines for the same gun, a safeguard against single vendor failure. Over time, the same core gun could feed podded versions for other aircraft, naval mounts and the planned Dhruv Next Generation. The larger gain is strategic. A home grown turret closes one of the last import gaps in India’s attack helicopter chain and strengthens the case for exports of the Prachand to countries in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia.
