1 September 2026 NATIONAL

The Banas Bio-Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Model Plant, a joint initiative of Banas Dairy, Suzuki Motor Corporation, and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), has been inaugurated in Banaskantha, Gujarat.

The plant is designed to promote clean energy, support a circular economy, and create additional income opportunities for livestock farmers. The facility processes 100 Metric Tonnes Per Day (MTPD) of cattle dung through anaerobic digestion to generate clean fuel and organic fertilizer.

Additionally, 9 taxis were flagged off under the “Gramin Bharat Taxi” service, which is the first rural-level cooperative-model taxi service in India where drivers own their vehicles.

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has approved the proposal to establish Asia’s first desert zoological park and desert-themed night safari at Juna Deesa in the Banaskantha district of Gujarat.

The project, with an estimated budget of ₹542.14 crore, spans across 103 hectares of contiguous government land. It will be developed as a 100% eco-friendly space utilizing solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and advanced sewage treatment systems.

According to the data released by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), the Asiatic lion population in India has grown by over 70% in the last decade. The population of the Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) has increased from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025.

It is to be noted that India is the exclusive habitat for the wild Asiatic lion, which is localized within the Gir National Park and its surrounding landscape across 11 districts of Gujarat. Project Lion, launched in 2020 to ensure the long-term conservation of the species, has led to an expansion of the lion range from 30,000 sq km in 2020 to nearly 35,000 sq km.

The Geographical Indications Registry (GIR), under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), has granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to the centuries-old Pithora Painting tradition of Gujarat.

These paintings are traditionally created by Lakharas on the inner walls and verandahs of tribal homes.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has granted in-principle approval for two maritime infrastructure projects in Gujarat under the Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS).

The first project is a Greenfield Shipbuilding Cluster at Kuchhadi in the Porbandar district, covering nearly 2,000 acres. The second project is a Ship Repair Facility at Vadinar in the Gulf of Kutch, which will be developed at a cost of ₹1,570 crore by Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) and the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA).

NITI Aayog has released its first-ever "Investment Friendliness Index (IFI) 2026", unveiled by its Vice Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri.

Gujarat emerged as the top overall performer with a score of 56.6, followed by Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Odisha. Among large states, Gujarat is the leader, while Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal are the worst performers.

Uttarakhand is the leader among Hilly & Northeastern states, and Goa is the leader among City States & UTs. Lakshadweep recorded the lowest overall score nationwide, followed by Ladakh and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

The index evaluates all 28 states and 8 Union Territories (UTs) based on 84 indicators across 8 economic pillars: Infrastructure, Business Climate, Government Policy, Resources, Regulatory Ease, Institutional Environment, Financial Health, and Environmental Resilience.

The Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN) under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has signed an addendum to implement the Amended BharatNet Programme (ABP) in Gujarat. The agreement was signed at Sanchar Bhawan, New Delhi, involving the DBN, the Gujarat government, Gujarat Fibre Grid Network Ltd (GFGNL), and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL).

The government has approved ₹5,629 crore for this initiative to upgrade rural telecom infrastructure. The programme aims to cover 14,287 Gram Panchayats and provide on-demand connectivity to 3,895 villages across the state.

Union Minister Amit Shah has launched the Prime Minister Family Care Tracker (PM-FCT) pilot project in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The initiative aims to strengthen beneficiary identification and ensure the timely delivery of government welfare schemes.

The PM-FCT serves as an integrated digital platform to monitor the health, nutrition, education, and welfare benefits of children from the prenatal stage up to 18 years of age.

According to the 'Review of Maritime Transport 2025' report released by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), India has become the world's leading ship recycling nation in 2025. India increased its global share in ship recycling to 35.4% (up from 30.1% in 2024).

The recycling volume reached 2.99 million gross tons (GT), marking a nearly 60% increase from 1.86 million GT. With this development, India has surpassed its Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 target five years ahead of schedule.

The Ship-breaking Credit Note Scheme (SbCN) offers credits worth 40% of the scrap value, which are usable up to 5% of the cost of a new vessel. Additionally, the government provided ₹53.5 crore in modernization support, enabling the establishment of 115 Hong Kong International Convention (HKC)-compliant facilities.

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) has signed an agreement with the Gujarat government to develop a Common Technical Facility (CTF) for the space-tech sector at the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) in Khoraj, Gujarat.

IN-SPACe will provide technical expertise and financial assistance of up to ₹100 crore for the procurement of equipment required for the development of the CTF.
