Gujarat has been awarded the Agriculture Leadership Award 2026 for its outstanding performance in the horticulture sector. The award was presented by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at the 17th Agriculture Leadership Conclave 2026 held in New Delhi. Gujarat Agriculture Minister Jitu Vaghani received the honour on behalf of the state government.

The Agriculture Leadership Award

The Agriculture Leadership Award was instituted in 2008 by the Agriculture Today Group, an Indian media platform established in 1998 that works to facilitate dialogue among policymakers, agricultural scientists, and farmers. The award was created on the advice of the legendary agricultural scientist Dr M. S. Swaminathan, widely regarded as the father of the Green Revolution in India.

The award selection is overseen by a National Awards Committee chaired by Justice P. Sathasivam, former Chief Justice of India and former Governor of Kerala. The two-tier selection process involves sub-committees that evaluate nominations and recommend candidates to the national committee for final approval. This structure ensures that the award carries credibility and transparency.

The 17th Agriculture Leadership Conclave was held on 8-9 July 2026 at The Oberoi, New Delhi, under the theme “Feeding the Future”. The conclave brought together over 500 attendees, 50 speakers, and participants from across the agricultural ecosystem, including policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and farmers. The event also featured the MS Swaminathan Global Dialogue on Climate Change and Food Security, reflecting the growing link between climate resilience and agricultural sustainability.

Gujarat’s Horticulture Sector: Key Drivers of Growth

Horticulture refers to the branch of agriculture that deals with the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices, plantation crops, and aromatic and medicinal plants. Gujarat has emerged as a national leader in this sector through a combination of favourable agro-climatic conditions, policy support, and farmer adoption of modern techniques.

Gujarat is among the top producers of banana and mango in India. The state has over 1.77 lakh hectares under mango cultivation, making it the fourth largest mango-producing state in the country. Banana cultivation in south Gujarat, particularly in the districts of Anand, Surat, and Bharuch, has seen remarkable growth due to the adoption of tissue culture technology and drip irrigation. Mango varieties such as Kesar and Alphonso from Gujarat are well known in domestic and export markets.

The state’s performance in horticulture is reflected in its production numbers. India’s total horticulture production reached 3,777.76 lakh tonnes in 2025-26, up from 3,707.38 lakh tonnes in 2024-25. Gujarat has contributed significantly to this growth, with its fruit production alone crossing 9,347 thousand tonnes in 2025, marking a steady increase from 8,383 thousand tonnes in 2024.

Crop TypeIndia Production 2025-26 (Lakh Tonnes)Gujarat Contribution
Fruits1,214.75Major producer of banana, mango, papaya
Vegetables2,210.00Key contributor in potato, tomato, onion
Spices126.55Growing presence
Flowers45.84Increasing area under cultivation

A major factor behind this success has been the adoption of micro-irrigation. Gujarat has the largest area under drip irrigation in the country, a direct result of policy push during the tenure of the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the 2000s. The Sardar Patel Sahakar Bhandar Yojana, Krushi Mahotsav, and Soil Health Card programme were among the initiatives that transformed Gujarat’s agricultural landscape. The state recorded the highest agricultural growth rate of 9.9% in the country during the Tenth Five Year Plan (2002-2007).

A Track Record of Agricultural Excellence

This is not the first time Gujarat has been recognised at the Agriculture Leadership Awards. The state has built a consistent track record of national recognition across multiple areas of agriculture:

YearAward CategorySector Recognised
2009Best Agriculture StateOverall agriculture
2014Best Agriculture StateOverall agriculture
2018Best Agriculture StateOverall agriculture
2019Agriculture Leadership AwardAnimal husbandry
2026Agriculture Leadership AwardHorticulture

The 2026 recognition is notable because it is the first time the state has been honoured specifically for horticulture, signalling the growing importance of this sub-sector in India’s agricultural economy. The award underscores how Gujarat has diversified from traditional grain-based farming into high-value horticultural crops that offer better returns to farmers.

At the award ceremony, Rajnath Singh and Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde praised Gujarat’s progressive agricultural policies. Minister Jitu Vaghani dedicated the award to the farmers of Gujarat and the personnel of the state Agriculture Department, noting that the recognition would inspire the state to achieve new benchmarks.
