3 June 2026 DEFENCE

Union Minister Rajnath Singh has inaugurated the private defence manufacturing complex of the NIBE Group in Shirdi, Maharashtra. The project involved an investment of over ₹5,000 crore.

Additionally, the Minister has approved the establishment of four defence corridors in Pune, Nashik, Ahmednagar, and Nagpur to strengthen the indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem of India.

India has launched its first electric hydrofoil vessel, the “Candela P12” (also called a “flying boat”), in Mumbai.

Developed by the Swedish manufacturer Candela, the vessel will be operated by JalVimana. The deployment is part of the initiative of the Maharashtra government to strengthen water-based transport infrastructure.

The RBI has cancelled the licence of Maharashtra-based Yashwant Co-operative Bank Ltd (UCB) with immediate effect, citing inadequate capital, poor financial health, and regulatory violations.

Following the liquidation process, eligible depositors of the UCB will be entitled to receive a deposit insurance claim of up to ₹5 lakh from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).

The Maharashtra government has signed MoUs with four key companies, namely NTPC Ltd (NTPC), Adani Power Ltd (APL), Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), and Lalitpur Power Generation Company Ltd (LPGCL), in Mumbai to attract investments worth ₹6.5 lakh crore for the development of nuclear energy projects.

These projects are projected to establish a total power generation capacity of 25,400 megawatts (MW).

The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the ‘AI Policy 2026’ to foster technological growth and infrastructure development in the state.

The policy aims to attract an investment of ₹10,000 crore and generate 1.5 lakh employment opportunities by 2031. The initiative focuses on the establishment of innovation centres and the implementation of skill training programs to support AI driven economic expansion.

30 April 2026 SCIENCE

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), has commissioned an X-Band Dual-Polarization Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) at its High Altitude Cloud Physics Laboratory (HACPL) in Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra. This installation is part of “Mission Mausam”, a multi-year initiative of the central government to make India a ‘Weather-Ready Nation’.

It is to be noted that the radar is located at an elevation of 1,400 m in the Western Ghats and operates at a frequency of 9.45 GHz. Additionally, IITM has signed an MoU with the Space Applications Centre (SAC) of the ISRO to jointly develop satellite-based meteorological products.

The Regiment of Artillery of the Indian Army has launched its first blue water sailing expedition named ‘Samudra Sahas’ from Marve, Mumbai. The event, inaugurated by NS Sarna (Commandant of the School of Artillery), commemorates the bicentenary (200 years) of the Regiment and honours the maritime legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The voyage covers 520 nautical miles along the Konkan Coast in four legs using 21-foot Seabird class boats. Led by Kshitij Nair and Prakash Funde, the team navigates 7 nautical miles off the coast with wind speeds ranging from 2-15 knots.

The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has designated two more institutions as national repositories under Section 39 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 (BD Act). The initiative aims to enhance the conservation and systematic documentation of biological resources.

The new repositories include the Referral Centre Bhavasagara at the Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology (CMLRE) in Kochi (Kerala) and the MACS Collection of Microorganisms and National Fungal Culture Collection at the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) in Pune (Maharashtra). With the additions, the total count of the national network of repositories has increased to 20.
