National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has been selected for the Lokmanya Tilak National Award 2026 in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to strengthening India’s national security framework. The award will be presented to him by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on August 1, 2026, at a ceremony in Pune, Maharashtra. Doval joins a distinguished list of past recipients including former prime ministers, presidents, and icons of Indian science and industry.

What Is the Lokmanya Tilak National Award?

The Lokmanya Tilak National Award is a civilian honour instituted in 1983 by the Tilak Smarak Mandir Trust, based in Pune, Maharashtra. It is named after Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856-1920), popularly known as Lokmanya, who was one of the most influential leaders of India’s freedom movement. Tilak was a scholar, mathematician, philosopher, and nationalist who famously declared, “Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it.”

The award is presented annually on August 1, the death anniversary of Lokmanya Tilak. It recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to nation-building across fields such as public administration, science and technology, national defence, social reform, and community leadership. The award consists of a memento, a citation, and a cash prize of ₹1 lakh.

The Award Ceremony and Selection

The award ceremony is scheduled for August 1, 2026, at the Maharashtra Mandal Ground in Pune. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will confer the honour on Ajit Doval. The event is expected to be attended by Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, and other dignitaries.

The Tilak Smarak Mandir Trust selected Doval for his pivotal role in architecting India’s national security architecture. According to the Trust, Doval has been recognised for strengthening the national security framework, spearheading strategic security ventures, improving coordination among intelligence agencies, and protecting India’s strategic interests.

Who Is Ajit Doval?

Ajit Kumar Doval is a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1968 batch from the Kerala cadre. He is widely regarded as one of India’s foremost security and intelligence strategists. Born on January 20, 1945, in Ghiri, Pauri Garhwal (present-day Uttarakhand), Doval joined the IPS after completing his education at Agra University. He later earned an M.Phil. in International Relations from a university in the United Kingdom.

Career in Intelligence

Doval spent over three decades in India’s intelligence establishment, most notably in the Intelligence Bureau (IB), where he rose to become its Director in 2004. During his tenure, he was involved in several high-stakes covert and counter-insurgency operations. He played a critical role in Operation Black Thunder (1986-1988), which successfully flushed out Sikh militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. He also served in high-risk assignments in Mizoram, Punjab, Sikkim, and Jammu and Kashmir, as well as in Indian missions in Islamabad and London.

For his gallantry, Doval was awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, in 1989. He is among the youngest recipients of this prestigious honour.

National Security Advisor

On May 30, 2014, Doval was appointed as India’s fifth National Security Advisor (NSA) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has been reappointed multiple times, making him the longest-serving NSA in India’s history. As NSA, he heads the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) and advises the Prime Minister on all matters of national security, strategic affairs, and foreign policy.
