Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, received the Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, the highest civilian distinction of France. French Ambassador to India Thierry Mathou conferred the insignia on him on 28 October 2026 at the Residence of France in New Delhi. The award recognises his work of more than three decades in strengthening economic ties between India and France.
What Is the Legion of Honour
The Legion of Honour is the highest civilian distinction of France. It is officially called the National Order of the Legion of Honour. It rewards outstanding service to France in civil or military life, and it can be given to any person irrespective of nationality.
The Order was established on 19 May 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, who was then the First Consul of France. It replaced the old system of royal honours that the French Revolution had removed. Its guiding idea was simple. Personal merit would count, not birth or rank. The motto of the Order is Honneur et Patrie, which means Honour and Fatherland.
The President of France is the Grand Master of the Order. All appointments are made in the name of the President. Emmanuel Macron, the current President, named Mittal to the Order on 12 October 2026. The insignia was later presented in New Delhi.
Five Grades of the Order
The Order has three ranks and two higher dignities. Every new member enters at the lowest level of Knight. Higher levels need fresh merit and a minimum number of years in the previous level.
| Level | French Name | Minimum Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Knight | Chevalier | 20 years of public service or professional activity with outstanding merit |
| Officer | Officier | 8 years as Knight with new merit |
| Commander | Commandeur | 5 years as Officer with new merit |
| Grand Officer | Grand Officier | 3 years as Commander |
| Grand Cross | Grand Croix | 3 years as Grand Officer, the highest level |
Sunil Bharti Mittal was appointed Chevalier, or Knight. This is the entry level of the Order. The badge for a Knight is a white enamel five pointed star worn on the left side of the chest on a red ribbon. Officers add a rosette to the same ribbon, while higher levels use a neck ribbon, sash and star.
Why Sunil Bharti Mittal Received the Honour
France honoured Sunil Bharti Mittal for his long standing work in deepening economic ties between India and France. The citation also mentions his pioneering role in telecommunications, digital infrastructure and satellite communications.
The announcement was made on 12 October 2026 by Bharti Enterprises. The company said the President of France had named Mittal a Knight of the Order. The formal presentation took place on 28 October 2026 at the Residence of France in New Delhi.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Thierry Mathou said Mittal had been a friend of France for more than thirty years. He pointed to three areas of work. Mittal built close business links with French firms, supported high level dialogue between the two countries, and made large investments in the satellite sector.
In his acceptance remarks, Mittal said he was moved and humbled by the award. He thanked President Emmanuel Macron and said he would work to deepen economic ties between India and France further.
Three Decades of Business Ties Between Mittal and France
The link between Mittal and France began in 1992. At that time, Bharti joined hands with Compagnie Generale des Eaux, a French company, to bid for mobile telephone licences in India. This partnership helped Bharti launch mobile services in Delhi in 1995 under the brand Airtel. That was the start of a business relationship that has lasted more than thirty years.
Later partnerships added depth to the tie. Bharti formed a life insurance joint venture with AXA, the French insurance group. It also worked closely with Alcatel Lucent, the French telecom equipment maker, for network equipment. These ventures showed how French and Indian firms could build large businesses together.
The most strategic link today is in space. Mittal is the Co-Chairman of Eutelsat, a satellite communications company headquartered in Paris. Eutelsat was formed by the merger of France based Eutelsat Communications with OneWeb in 2023. Bharti had led the rescue and revival of OneWeb with the British government before the merger. Today, Bharti Space Limited holds 17.88 percent in Eutelsat and remains its largest private shareholder. In November 2025, the French state raised its own holding to 29.65 percent with a subscription of 551 million euros, becoming the largest overall shareholder.
France sees Eutelsat as central to its goal of strategic independence in space communications. The company runs both low earth orbit and geostationary satellites and provides connectivity and broadcast services across the world. India and France are also expanding joint work in space and digital technology under the India France Special Global Strategic Partnership. Mittal, in his Eutelsat role, remains a key business figure in that partnership. He is set to attend the Choose France Summit for the fourth time.
