Singapore Airlines was named the best airline in the world at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2026 announced in London on 18 September 2026. The Singapore carrier reclaimed the top rank from Qatar Airways, with Cathay Pacific Airways, ANA All Nippon Airways and Turkish Airlines completing the top five. Among Indian carriers, Air India climbed 27 places to 57th rank to lead India and South Asia, while IndiGo slipped to 61st place.
What Is Skytrax?
Skytrax is a London-based international air transport rating organisation established in 1989. It runs the World Airline Awards and the World Airport Awards and publishes 1-Star to 5-Star ratings for airlines, airports and lounges based on professional audits and large passenger surveys.
Skytrax started the World Airline Awards in 1999 with its first global airline customer satisfaction survey. The awards are often called the Oscars of the aviation industry because they cover more than 300 airlines and are decided only by passengers. Skytrax also runs the World Airport Awards and a separate Star Rating programme that grades airlines, airports and lounges from 1-Star to 5-Star.
The Star Rating is different from the annual awards ranking. The Star Rating comes from professional audits where trained evaluators check seats, food, cleanliness, lounges and staff service for consistency across flights and airports. A 5-Star Airline Rating marks the highest standard of product and frontline service. The awards ranking, by contrast, comes from votes by millions of travellers in a given year.
World Best Airlines 2026: Top 10 Winners List
Singapore Airlines won the World’s Best Airline title for the sixth time at the 2026 World Airline Awards. Skytrax presented the awards at The Langham Hotel in London on 18 September 2026. The 2026 event was the 27th edition of the awards. Last year’s winner Qatar Airways moved to second place, while Cathay Pacific Airways held third place.
Singapore Airlines also won Best Airline in Asia, the World’s Best Economy Class and the World’s Best Economy Class Onboard Catering. The airline placed second for cabin crew. Its low cost subsidiary Scoot was named the World’s Best Long Haul Low Cost Airline for the sixth straight year. Qatar Airways won four honours, including the World’s Best Business Class Airline for the 13th time, the World’s Best Business Class Lounge and the World’s Best Onboard Wi-Fi award introduced for 2026. Cathay Pacific won the World’s Best Cabin Crew award.
The top 10 airlines in the world for 2026 show a strong lead for Asian and Gulf carriers. No carrier from the United States entered the top 10. Air Canada at 17th place was the only North American airline in the top 20.

Turkish Airlines won Best Airline in Europe and Air Canada won Best Airline in North America. The oneworld alliance was named the World’s Best Airline Alliance.
How Does Skytrax Voting and Rating Work?
Skytrax decides the World Airline Awards through a global passenger survey that is free, independent and open to any airline. For 2026, the survey ran from September 2025 to August 2026 and collected more than 24.8 million responses from travellers of over 100 nationalities. The survey covered more than 300 airlines and was offered in eight languages, including English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Passengers vote for their own favourite airlines and rate each part of the journey. The questionnaire covers check in and boarding, seat comfort and legroom, cabin cleanliness, food and drinks, inflight entertainment and Wi-Fi, and the help and behaviour of cabin and ground staff. Skytrax screens every entry for duplicate votes using IP and user details and removes suspect or ineligible entries.
Is Skytrax Reliable
Skytrax pays the full cost of the survey and the London awards event. Airlines pay no entry fee, no attendance fee and no charge to use the award logos. Skytrax accepts no outside sponsorship for the survey and states that it works without fear or favour. This structure is why the awards are described as the Passenger’s Choice Awards, because the result reflects customer choice rather than a jury or a commercial deal.
The Star Rating audit follows a separate method. Skytrax auditors test the airport and onboard product against unified standards for up to 800 service points. The audit checks consistency across aircraft types and routes, not a single good flight. Airlines can request the detailed method from Skytrax management, but the rating itself is awarded only after assessment is complete.
Best Airline in India: Air India and IndiGo Global Rank
Air India is the best airline in India in the Skytrax 2026 results. The flag carrier ranked 57th in the world, a jump of 27 places from 84th in 2025. The rise made Air India the second most improved airline globally in 2026 and the Most Improved Airline in Asia. IndiGo ranked 61st in the world, down from 39th in 2025, and remained the second highest Indian carrier in the global top 100.
Air India also topped the regional table for India and South Asia and won Best Airline Staff in India and South Asia. The staff prize recognises cabin crew, airport teams, customer support and operations staff. Air India swept the regional cabin prizes as well, winning Best Economy Class, Best Economy Class Onboard Catering, Best Business Class and Best Business Class Onboard Catering in India and South Asia.
The awards followed Air India’s upgrade to a 4-Star Airline Rating in June 2026 from its earlier 3-Star level. The 4-Star certification for Business Class and Economy Class is widely treated as a global benchmark for consistent quality across booking, lounges, seats, food and service. Air India linked the progress to its Vihaan.AI transformation plan, which covers new aircraft, retrofitted cabins, digital services and staff training. The airline said its Net Promoter Score, a gauge of whether passengers recommend the brand, rose from minus 35 in late 2022 to nearly plus 40 in 2026, with flagship Airbus A350 and Boeing 787-9 flights scoring in the high 60s.
IndiGo kept its lead in the low cost segment. Skytrax named IndiGo the Best Low Cost Airline in India and South Asia, the Best Cabin Crew in India and South Asia and the Cleanest Airline in India and South Asia. Globally, IndiGo placed ninth in the World’s Best Low Cost Airlines list, behind winner AirAsia and runner up Scoot. The contrast is sharp. IndiGo leads on cost efficient operations and cabin crew service at home, while Air India leads on full service cabins and overall regional rank.
| Rank in India and South Asia 2026 | Airline |
|---|---|
| 1 | Air India |
| 2 | IndiGo |
| 3 | Akasa Air |
| 4 | Air India Express |
| 5 | SriLankan Airlines |
| 6 | SpiceJet |
| 7 | Beond |
| 8 | Biman Bangladesh Airlines |
| 9 | Pakistan International Airlines |
| 10 | Maldivian |
The 2026 outcome shows that Indian carriers remain outside the global top 50 even as service scores improve. For passengers, the practical meaning is clear. Air India now offers the strongest full service option among home carriers on long routes, while IndiGo offers the strongest low cost and short haul choice with highly rated crew.
