Deepak Dhar was born on 30 October 1951 in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in small towns across the state, and developed an early interest in science, encouraged partly by the science magazines his father brought home. He completed his BSc at the University of Allahabad in 1970 and his master’s degree in physics at IIT Kanpur in 1972.
