Gurcharan Das, the well-known Indian author and public intellectual, has become the first Indian to receive the Lifetime Libertarian Award conferred by Liberty International, a US-based organisation that promotes freedom worldwide. He received the honour during the 40th Liberty International World Conference held in Kathmandu, Nepal. The award recognises his decades-long contribution to the ideas of liberty, free markets and individual responsibility.

What Is Liberty International?

Liberty International is a non-profit, libertarian educational and networking organisation based in Dallas, Texas, United States. Its roots go back to 1969, when three former members of a conservative youth movement founded the Society for Individual Liberty. In 1980, a separate initiative called Libertarian International came up, and the two merged in 1989 under the name International Society for Individual Liberty. The organisation adopted its present public name, Liberty International, in 2016 to avoid confusion with the acronym of a militant group.

Libertarianism is the political philosophy that places the freedom of the individual above everything else. It holds that people should be free to keep what they earn, run their own lives and trade without unnecessary control by the state. Liberty International advances this philosophy through education, leadership training and networking, and claims a presence in more than 80 countries today.

The World Conference and Its Awards

The organisation’s flagship activity is the annual Liberty International World Conference (LIWC), held in a different country each year since 1982. The first such gathering took place in Zurich, Switzerland. Every year, the conference honours global champions of freedom with a set of awards. The Lifetime Libertarian Award is the highest distinction and recognises individuals whose ideas and leadership have greatly advanced the cause of liberty. It was introduced only in 2024, and its earlier recipients include former US Congressman Ron Paul and Argentine economist Alberto Benegas Lynch Jr.

The 40th World Conference in Kathmandu

The 40th Liberty International World Conference was held in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 7 to 9 August 2026, under the theme “Liberty Rising: Building Freedom in a Changing World”. It was the first time Nepal hosted the event, with around 150 participants from Nepal and abroad discussing economic liberty, entrepreneurship, democratic governance and digital freedom.

At this conference, three honours were presented. The Voice of Liberty Award went to Samriddhi Foundation, a Nepal-based policy research organisation. The Freedom Torch Award went to Sir Roger Douglas, the former finance minister of New Zealand. Gurcharan Das, who was also a keynote speaker, received the Lifetime Libertarian Award for his “lasting contribution to the advancement of liberty”.

Who Is Gurcharan Das?

Gurcharan Das is one of India’s most celebrated authors and public intellectuals. He was born on 3 October 1943 in Lyallpur (now Faisalabad in Pakistan), and his family moved to India during the Partition. He studied philosophy with honours at Harvard University in the United States, where he was later inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, a prestigious honour society, for high attainments in liberal scholarship.

Before becoming a full-time writer, Das had a long corporate career. He served as CEO of Procter & Gamble India and as Managing Director for Strategic Planning at Procter & Gamble Worldwide, retiring at the age of 50 to write. He has also been closely associated with the Centre for Civil Society, a leading liberal think tank based in New Delhi, where he chaired the board of trustees.

Major Books

Das is best known for his bestselling book India Unbound, published in 2000, which tells the story of India’s economic rise from Independence to the global information age. The book has been translated into many languages and adapted into a documentary by the BBC.

The news snippet names his essay collection India Grows at Night: A Liberal Case for a Strong State, published in 2012, which was rated among the best books of 2013 by the Financial Times. In it, Das argues that India grows in spite of the state, not because of it, and makes a case for a strong but liberal state that can act quickly and fairly. His other major works include The Difficulty of Being Good, a philosophical study of the Mahabharata and dharma, and Kama: The Riddle of Desire, besides a novel, plays and a memoir.

Significance of the Award

The award marks a milestone for India. Das is the first Indian to receive this honour, which recognises his long public and literary engagement with the ideas of liberty and individual responsibility. Accepting the award, he said he was delighted to be rewarded for something he believed in, and described “inner freedom” as India’s unique contribution to the Western idea of liberalism.

The recognition also carries a deeper message about India’s economic journey. Das has long argued that India’s growth story since the economic reforms of 1991 is, at its core, a story of individuals being given room to build and compete. The global liberty movement honouring an Indian thinker signals that India’s market-based reforms and entrepreneurial energy are being noticed on the world stage.
