The Ministry of Defence signed a ₹661.5 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) in New Delhi on 6 October 2026 for BrahMos Fire Control Systems (FCS) and Launchers for Indian Navy ships. The Ministry placed the order under the Buy Indian-IDDM category with a minimum 68% indigenous content. The systems will strengthen the Navy’s primary surface to surface strike weapon, which proved its combat value during Operation Sindoor in May 2025.

What Is the BrahMos Missile?

The BrahMos missile is a supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia. It flies at nearly three times the speed of sound and can strike ships and land targets with high accuracy. The Indian Army, Navy and Air Force use it as a frontline precision strike weapon.

A cruise missile is a guided weapon that flies like a small pilotless aircraft for most of its path, staying inside the atmosphere. BrahMos is supersonic, which means it travels faster than sound. Sound travels at about 1,235 km per hour at sea level. BrahMos cruises at about Mach 2.8, or 2.8 times that speed. This high speed gives enemy air defences very little time to react.

The name BrahMos combines two rivers. Brah comes from the Brahmaputra in India and Mos comes from the Moskva in Russia. The full form often used in reference material is Brahmaputra Moskva supersonic cruise missile. The blending of names reflects the joint Indo Russian partnership behind the weapon.

BrahMos works on the fire and forget principle. After launch, it guides itself to the target without further control from the operator. It can be launched from ships, land based mobile launchers, submarines and aircraft. This flexibility makes the same basic missile useful for all three services. The Navy uses the ship launched version for sea to sea and sea to land strikes.

The New Navy Contract: Fire Control Systems and Launchers

The Ministry of Defence signed the ₹661.5 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited in New Delhi on 6 October 2026. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh (as of October 2026) was present at the signing. The order covers BrahMos Fire Control Systems and Launchers for Indian Navy vessels. Reports indicate the equipment is meant for upgrading older frontline ships, including two Veer class corvettes and two Rajput class destroyers, while new warships already carry BrahMos as standard fit.

A Fire Control System, or FCS, is the computer and radar linked unit that calculates how the missile should fly to hit its target. The FCS takes inputs on ship position, target location, wind and sea conditions. It then feeds flight data to the missile before launch and manages salvo firing. A salvo means firing several missiles within short gaps at one target or at different targets in different directions.

A Launcher is the structure that holds and fires the missile from the ship. The Navy uses both vertical launch modules and inclined canister launchers. BrahMos Aerospace has developed a Quadruple Canisterised Inclined Launcher that can hold four missiles and fire them singly or together. Reports on this contract point to inclined launchers for retrofitting older ships where vertical cells cannot be easily installed.

The Ministry described BrahMos as the Navy’s primary Surface to Surface Missile (SSM) for maritime strike operations. An SSM is fired from a ship to hit another ship or a target on land. The system can engage both sea and land targets at extended ranges with pinpoint accuracy at supersonic speed. The project is expected to generate employment over three years and increase work for Indian industry, including Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

What Is Buy Indian-IDDM Category?

The Buy Indian-IDDM category means purchase from an Indian vendor of a product that is Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured. The vendor must prove Indian design with at least 50% indigenous content on base contract price. This contract stipulates a higher 68% indigenous content.

IDDM stands for Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured. It is the top priority category under the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020. DAP 2020 is the rulebook that guides all capital purchases by the armed forces. The priority order starts with Buy Indian-IDDM, followed by Buy Indian, Buy and Make Indian and other categories. The system gives first preference to weapons designed in India.

Indigenous content refers to the share of contract cost that stays in India after excluding imports, foreign services and royalties paid abroad. The base contract price means total price minus taxes and duties. For Buy Indian-IDDM, the minimum threshold is 50%. The BrahMos FCS and launcher order at 68% therefore exceeds the minimum by a clear margin. Higher local content supports jobs, retains technology and reduces dependence on imports.

BrahMos Missile Range and Speed: Technical Specifications

The standard BrahMos flies at Mach 2.8 to Mach 3.0 and carries a 200 to 300 kg conventional warhead. Its original range was 290 km. After India joined the Missile Technology Control Regime in 2016, extended versions of about 450 km and later 800 km were tested. The missile can cruise as high as 15 km and dive to as low as 10 metres above the sea.

BrahMos is a two stage missile. The first stage is a solid propellant booster that pushes the missile past the speed of sound and then separates. The second stage is a liquid fuelled ramjet that sustains supersonic cruise. A ramjet is an air breathing engine that collects oxygen from the atmosphere instead of carrying it onboard. This design saves weight and gives longer range than a pure rocket of the same size.

Guidance comes from an Inertial Navigation System (INS) in mid flight, corrected by satellite signals from GPS, GLONASS and India’s GAGAN system. An INS is a set of sensors that tracks movement without outside help. In the final phase, an active radar seeker locks onto the target. The missile can fly a high profile, a sea skimming low profile, or a steep dive onto land targets.

Is BrahMos Supersonic or Hypersonic?

BrahMos in service today is supersonic, not hypersonic. Supersonic means speed above Mach 1 and below Mach 5. Hypersonic means speed of Mach 5 or more. BrahMos flies near Mach 3. The planned BrahMos-2, powered by a scramjet engine, aims for Mach 8 and would be hypersonic. That variant remains under development.

Who Makes BrahMos: Inside BrahMos Aerospace

BrahMos Aerospace is an Indo Russian joint venture headquartered in New Delhi. India holds 50.5% through the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia holds 49.5% through NPO Mashinostroyenia. DRDO is India’s main defence research agency, established in 1958. NPO Mashinostroyenia is a Russian missile and space enterprise based in Reutov near Moscow, founded in 1944.

The two governments signed the Inter Governmental Agreement in Moscow on 12 February 1998. The company was set up with an authorised capital of about $250 million. The first successful launch took place from Chandipur in Odisha on 12 June 2001. The Navy inducted the system first in 2005 aboard INS Rajput, followed by the Army in 2007 and later the air launched version on the Su-30MKI fighter.

India brought strengths in guidance, software and missile integration from the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) launched in 1983. Russia brought the liquid ramjet engine technology derived from the P-800 Oniks missile. Final integration takes place at the BrahMos Integration Complex in Hyderabad. A new integration and testing facility has also come up in Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh to raise production capacity. Indian partners include Larsen and Toubro for airframes and canisters, Bharat Electronics for electronics and many MSMEs across the supply chain.

Why BrahMos Is So Special: BrahMos vs Tomahawk

BrahMos is valued because speed plus accuracy creates very high destructive power. At Mach 3, the missile reaches its target in minutes. The short flight time shrinks the window for interception. Kinetic energy, or energy of motion, rises sharply with speed. A heavier and faster missile therefore causes far greater damage than its warhead weight alone suggests.

The comparison most often searched is BrahMos against the American Tomahawk cruise missile. The Tomahawk is subsonic, flying at about Mach 0.75. It flies farther, about 1,600 km, but much slower. BrahMos flies shorter distances in its current versions but arrives far faster and is harder to stop. Its stealth features and sea skimming flight also lower radar detection.

FeatureBrahMosTomahawk

PropulsionSolid booster plus liquid ramjetTurbofan engine
Interception DifficultyVery hard due to speed and low flightEasier to track due to slower speed

The combat record added to this reputation. During Operation Sindoor in May 2025, India used air launched BrahMos from Su-30MKI aircraft against airbases and radar sites in Pakistan. The DRDO leadership later described BrahMos as the primary offensive weapon in that operation. About 40 Su-30MKI aircraft have been modified to carry the missile. Each aircraft carries one missile on a strengthened under fuselage station.

Exports and Future Variants: BrahMos NG and BrahMos-2

The Philippines became the first foreign buyer in 2022 with a $375 million order for three shore based batteries. Deliveries began in 2025 to the Philippine Marine Corps. Vietnam followed with an agreement confirmed in 2025. Indonesia entered an agreement in March 2026 and signed a broader defence package with India in July 2026 covering two BrahMos batteries valued at about $200 million along with Astra air to air missiles. Talks with other countries, including the United Arab Emirates, continue. Every third country sale needs concurrence from both India and Russia.

Future growth centres on two variants. BrahMos-NG, or Next Generation, is shorter and lighter at about 6 metres and 1,500 kg. It keeps a range near 290 km and speed near Mach 3.5 but has a smaller radar signature and an AESA radar seeker. AESA stands for Active Electronically Scanned Array, a radar that steers beams electronically for faster tracking. The lighter weight will allow the Tejas fighter and submarines to carry it.

BrahMos-2 is the planned hypersonic follow on using a scramjet engine with a target speed of Mach 8 and a range goal near 1,500 km. A scramjet is an advanced air breathing engine built for hypersonic flight. Flight testing is expected in 2026 or 2027. The BrahMos-ER, or Extended Range version, bridges the gap with ranges of 450 km and later 800 km for the Army and Navy. The 800 km version remains under trials, with completion targeted around 2027.
