Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri has announced that Kolkata will host the fifth edition of India Energy Week 2027 from 28 to 31 January 2027 at the New Town Convention Centre. The announcement marks the first time the flagship energy event will be held in eastern India. The 2027 edition is expected to bring together global CEOs, policymakers, investors and innovators to discuss energy security, innovation and sustainable growth.
What Is India Energy Week?
India Energy Week is India’s flagship international exhibition and conference for the full energy value chain. The platform brings together ministers, industry leaders, investors, researchers and technology providers to discuss oil, gas, biofuels, hydrogen, renewables, petrochemicals and digital solutions in one place.
The event is held under the patronage of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry (FIPI) organises the event. FIPI is the apex industry body for the hydrocarbon sector in India. It was formed in December 2016 through the merger of the Petrotech Society and the Petroleum Federation of India, and it works as the link between energy companies, the government and regulators.
The format of India Energy Week combines a large exhibition with two conference streams. The Strategic Conference hosts ministers, CEOs and policymakers for discussions on policy, investment and partnerships. The Technical Conference hosts engineers, researchers and technology firms who present practical work across exploration, refining, liquefied natural gas (LNG), city gas distribution, hydrogen, biofuels, digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI).
When and Where Will India Energy Week 2027 Be Held?
India Energy Week 2027 will be held from 28 to 31 January 2027 at the New Town Convention Centre in Kolkata, West Bengal. The four day event will be the fifth edition of India Energy Week and the first edition to be hosted in eastern India.
The New Town Convention Centre is formally known as the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre. The centre is located at New Town in Kolkata and is owned and operated by the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO). The complex was inaugurated on 13 October 2017 after construction costing about ₹500 crore. Larsen and Toubro built the complex based on a design by Dulal Mukherjee and Associates.
The main auditorium of the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre seats about 3,200 people, with two smaller auditoriums, four banquet and exhibition halls, a large pre function area and parking for more than 500 cars. An adjoining hotel block with about 100 rooms supports large meetings and exhibitions. The complex was designed to attract meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) tourism, and it has earlier hosted the Bengal Global Business Summit and other national meets.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who holds the petroleum and natural gas portfolio (as of October 2026), reviewed preparations for the 2027 edition with officials and state representatives. A curtain raiser programme for India Energy Week 2027 was held in Mumbai and linked to Kolkata, with senior officials from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), FIPI and the West Bengal government taking part.
What Is the Theme for India Energy Week 2027?
The official theme for India Energy Week 2027 is “Unlocking Innovation. Securing Energy. Shaping Tomorrow.” The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has said the theme captures the need for new technology, stable supplies and long term planning at a time of volatile global oil and gas markets.
The 2027 programme will give special attention to technologies and partnerships that support energy security, affordability and sustainability, with focus on the needs of countries in the Global South. The Global South refers to developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America that face common challenges of access, cost and climate action. Sessions will cover crude oil and natural gas exploration, refining, LNG, city gas distribution and petrochemicals alongside hydrogen, biofuels, renewables, digitalisation, AI and net zero pathways.
The exhibition in Kolkata is planned around 11 thematic zones and 13 international pavilions. The zones will be hosted mainly by public sector oil and gas companies and will cover areas such as hydrogen, biofuels, LNG ecosystem, petrochemicals, Make in India, digitalisation and AI, and net zero solutions. Recent editions also added zones for nuclear energy and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which is a low carbon fuel made from waste oils, biomass or synthetic sources for use in aircraft.
India Energy Week 2027 will also promote startups and young innovators. The event will feature startup challenges such as Avinya and Vasudha, along with new formats such as Shark Tank style pitching sessions, the Kolkata Debates and Ignite Talks. These platforms allow entrepreneurs to present working models for clean cooking, energy storage, carbon capture, fuel efficiency and decentralised solar power directly to investors and public sector buyers.
How India Energy Week Has Grown Since 2023
India Energy Week was launched in 2023 during India’s presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20). The G20 is a forum of 19 large economies plus the European Union and the African Union that discusses global economic stability. The first edition placed India’s energy priorities, companies and technologies at the centre of the global discussion instead of limiting India to the role of a fuel buyer.
Growth since then has been rapid in scale and scope. The inaugural meet focused mainly on oil and gas. Later editions widened the agenda to include renewables, green hydrogen, digital energy, energy finance, nuclear power and sustainable aviation fuel. The number of participants, exhibitors and foreign delegations rose every year.

The Goa venue used in 2024 and 2026 was developed by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). ONGC is India’s largest crude oil and natural gas producer. It is a central public sector company headquartered in New Delhi and founded in 1956. The corporation built a 4,000 seat convention facility at its Advanced Training Institute campus in Betul in South Goa at a reported cost of about ₹1,000 crore to host the 2026 edition.
Why Eastern India Matters for Energy Security and Transition
India’s energy security means ensuring uninterrupted, affordable and clean supplies for a fast growing economy. India is the world’s third largest consumer of crude oil and meets a large share of its needs through imports. Stable contracts for crude oil, LNG and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is the cooking gas used in homes, therefore remain central to price stability and growth.
At the same time India is expanding renewable energy at speed. The country set a target of 500 GW of non fossil capacity by 2030 and net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2070. Non fossil capacity includes solar, wind, large hydropower and nuclear power. Total installed power capacity crossed 513,730 MW by December 2025, with non fossil sources forming about 51.93 percent of the total. India has also set an ambition of 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047. Holding the 2027 meet in Kolkata puts the focus on eastern and northeastern India, where refineries at Paradip in Odisha, Haldia in West Bengal, Barauni in Bihar and Numaligarh in Assam, along with ports on the Bay of Bengal and coal and steel belts, shape both conventional supply and the clean transition.
India has also emerged as a refining and export hub. The country ranks among the top five exporters of petroleum products in the world, with supplies reaching more than 150 countries. The government has pointed to an investment opportunity of about $500 billion across the energy value chain, including exploration, refining, LNG terminals, petrochemicals, shipbuilding and clean fuels. The stated aim is to raise annual investment in oil and gas exploration to $100 billion by the end of this decade and to expand the area under exploration to one million square kilometres, including offshore blocks near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
How India Energy Week 2027 Will Be Organised
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas provides patronage to India Energy Week 2027. FIPI is the main organiser for the exhibition and industry coordination. Past editions were supported by global event specialists for conference delivery, and the official website publishes details on visitor registration, delegate passes, exhibitor lists and calls for technical papers.
The exhibition is expected to host more than 700 energy companies, including about 180 international exhibitors in recent editions. Companies display drilling tools, refinery equipment, LNG carriers, solar modules, electrolyzers for green hydrogen, which is hydrogen made with renewable electricity, and software for grid management. Country pavilions allow foreign governments and firms to present joint offers on fuel supply, technology transfer and project finance.
The conference programme has two main tracks. The Strategic Conference brings together energy ministers, heads of international bodies such as the International Energy Forum, chief executives and investors. Closed door leadership roundtables are held under the Chatham House Rule, which allows participants to use the information shared but not reveal the speaker. The Technical Conference invites engineers and researchers to submit abstracts, which are short summaries of proposed papers, through a formal call for papers. Accepted papers are presented across categories covering upstream exploration, refining, gas, hydrogen, biofuels, petrochemicals and digital operations. An invitation only lounge called the India Energy Club hosts private meetings for dignitaries and chief executives.
