Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has signed an academic collaboration agreement with Google to bring industry-relevant training in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, data science and cybersecurity to more than three lakh engineering students across Karnataka. The MoU was signed in Bengaluru by VTU Vice-Chancellor S. Vidyashankar, Registrar Prasad B. Rampure and Google for Education India Head Sanjay Jain. Students will get access to Google’s premium educational content at a heavily subsidised rate of ₹350 per student, compared to its usual market cost of around ₹20,000.

About Visvesvaraya Technological University

VTU is a collegiate public state university headquartered in Belagavi, Karnataka. It was established on 1 April 1998 under the VTU Act, 1994 by the Government of Karnataka and is named after Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, the legendary civil engineer and statesman who served as the 19th Diwan of Mysore and was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955. His birth anniversary on 15 September is celebrated as Engineers’ Day across India.

Today, VTU affiliates more than 220 engineering colleges and has a student population of nearly three lakh, making it one of the largest technical universities in the country by enrolment. It has three regional centres in Bengaluru, Kalaburagi and Mysuru, and offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes across engineering, technology and management disciplines.

What the Google-VTU Agreement Covers

The MoU aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry expectations by equipping students with skills that are in immediate demand. The partnership covers five core areas:

AreaDetails
Artificial IntelligenceTraining modules on AI fundamentals, machine learning, generative AI and prompt engineering
Cloud ComputingGoogle Cloud Platform skills, infrastructure management and deployment tools
Data ScienceData analytics, visualization, statistical modelling and big data tools
CybersecurityNetwork security, ethical hacking, threat analysis and compliance frameworks
Faculty DevelopmentComprehensive training for faculty members to integrate these modules into the curriculum

The learning models being introduced are aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the State Education Policy (SEP) of Karnataka. Google will provide its educational content at ₹350 per student, a cost that is already covered under the existing consortium library fee structure, so students will not have to pay anything extra this year.

The initiative is expected to benefit between 20,000 and 25,000 students and faculty directly through hands-on training and internship opportunities. A key highlight is the focus on employability: students will gain exposure to AI-powered mock interviews, over 1,900 industry projects and internships, GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) preparation materials, and technical webinars.

Other Partnerships Signed Alongside

VTU also announced parallel agreements with three other organisations on the same day, each targeting a different dimension of skill development:

Qualcomm through its subsidiary Stem Lore Innovators LLP will provide long-term training in AI, product prototyping, embedded systems and the Internet of Things (IoT). A Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Edge AI will be established under this partnership.

Bharat Skills Institute Foundation will introduce skill-oriented courses with a focus on project-based learning, JavaScript and data documentation. A skill development centre will be set up in phases.

Simulation Enabled Experiential Learning (SEEL), operated through VTU’s Mysuru e-learning centre, is a cloud-based digital learning platform. It allows engineering and MBA students to conduct laboratory work online using required software, enabling anytime, anywhere access. The platform also provides GATE preparation material, industry courses and expert-led workshops.

Why This Partnership Matters

The agreement comes at a time when India’s engineering graduates face a significant employability gap. Industry reports have repeatedly found that a large proportion of engineering graduates lack the practical skills required for technology jobs, particularly in fast-moving fields like AI. By integrating Google’s industry-grade training modules directly into the academic curriculum, VTU is taking a structured approach to closing this gap.

The partnership also aligns with the NEP 2020’s emphasis on industry-academia collaboration and multidisciplinary skill-based education. NEP 2020 calls for a departure from rote learning and mandates stronger linkages between universities and industry to make graduates job-ready. The VTU-Google MoU operationalises this vision at a large scale.

From an equity perspective, the subsidised pricing of ₹350 per student (against the standard ₹20,000) makes premium global content accessible to students from diverse economic backgrounds. Since VTU’s affiliated colleges span across Karnataka including tier-2 and tier-3 cities, this partnership has the potential to democratise AI education beyond Bengaluru’s tech hubs.
