What Is a Doppler Weather Radar and How Does It Work?
A Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) sends radio pulses into the sky and studies signals reflected by rain, hail and dust. By measuring the frequency change called the Doppler shift, the India Meteorological Department tracks wind speed and direction and locates thunderstorms, heavy rain and cyclones in real time.
The principle is called the Doppler effect, named after Austrian physicist Christian Doppler. When a cloud moves toward the radar, the reflected waves return at a higher frequency. When it moves away, the frequency drops. The radar computer turns this shift into wind speed and direction. The time taken for the pulse to return tells the distance of the cloud. The strength of the return, called reflectivity, tells how intense the rainfall or hail is.
A conventional radar only shows where clouds are present. A Doppler radar also shows how they move inside. This difference makes it possible to spot rotation inside a storm, sudden wind change and fast growing thunderclouds. IMD Doppler Radar Network: From 14 to 51
The national Doppler Weather Radar network has grown from 14 radars in 2014 to 51 radars in 2026. Before the Sambalpur commissioning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) received data from a network of 50 radars operated by IMD along with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and the Indian Space Research Organisation. The Sambalpur radar takes this count to 51. The government has announced that about 40 additional radars will be added across the country in the coming phase.
The expansion is part of a larger plan to fill observation gaps in interior, hilly and coastal areas. Official plans envisage deployment of 29 C Band, 45 X Band and 12 S Band radars across India, along with 19 wind profiler systems, 25 microwave radiometers and 60 new GPS radiosonde stations. Why Sambalpur Radar Matters for Odisha and Neighbouring States
The Sambalpur radar fills a long standing observation gap in interior Odisha. The two earlier radars at Paradip and Gopalpur mainly watch the coast and approaching cyclones from the Bay of Bengal. The districts of the interior had no precise system for tracking fast forming thunderstorms, lightning, hail and local heavy rain. The new radar brings western and central Odisha directly under continuous watch.
The coverage will benefit 13 districts, namely Sambalpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Sonepur, Balangir, Boudh, Nuapada, Angul, Kalahandi, Keonjhar and Dhenkanal. Adjoining pockets of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand also fall within range.
