The Ambani family, led by Mukesh Ambani, has retained its position as India’s richest business family for the third consecutive year, with a net worth of ₹25.8 lakh crore according to the 2026 Barclays Private Clients Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses List. Released by Hurun India in partnership with Barclays Private Bank India, the third edition of the list ranks India’s 300 most valuable family businesses, which are together worth $1.46 trillion, equivalent to about ₹138 lakh crore. This combined valuation means the group would rank as the world’s 18th-largest economy if treated as a single country, larger than the economies of the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Poland.

About the Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses List

Hurun India is the Indian arm of the global Hurun Report, a research and media group that tracks wealth and entrepreneurship. The parent organisation was founded in 1999 in the United Kingdom by Rupert Hoogewerf, a British accountant best known for creating the famous China Rich List. Hurun India itself was launched in 2012 and is led by founder and chief researcher Anas Rahman Junaid.

The Barclays Private Clients Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses List was first published in 2024, and the 2026 edition is the third annual release. A family business qualifies for the list only when a member of the next generation from the founding family is actively involved in running the business or serves on its board. Business values are calculated using share prices as of 30 June 2026, so the ranking reflects real market movements rather than personal claims.

The list is released jointly with Barclays Private Bank India, which provides banking and wealth-management services to ultra-high-net-worth families and business owners. The partnership signals how important family businesses have become to India’s private banking and wealth-management industry.

Top 10 Most Valuable Family Businesses

The Ambani family of Reliance Industries sits far ahead of the rest of the list. Its ₹25.8 lakh crore valuation is more than three times the value of the second-ranked family. Reliance, founded in 1957, is a diversified group spanning energy, retail, telecommunications, financial services, media and entertainment, and consumer products. Although its value dipped 8.5 per cent over the past year, the family stayed comfortably on top.

The rest of the top 10 shows a mix of older business houses and fast-growing new wealth. The Birla family, which controls the Aditya Birla Group, moved to second place with a value of ₹8.14 lakh crore, up 26 per cent in a year. The Jindal family of JSW Steel took third place at ₹8.02 lakh crore, helped by a 40 per cent rise in value, the best annual performance among the top five. The Bajaj and Mahindra families completed the top five.

The Anil Agarwal family recorded the biggest jump within the top 10, climbing three places to sixth position with a 75 per cent rise in value to ₹4.45 lakh crore. The rise came after the demerger of Vedanta into five separately listed companies. The Jindal family created the most value in absolute terms over three years, adding ₹3.3 lakh crore to its fortune.

First-Generation Category: Adani Family Leads

A separate ranking within the list tracks first-generation family businesses, enterprises built from scratch by living founders and now supported by the next generation. The Adani family, headed by Gautam Adani from Ahmedabad, led this category with a valuation of ₹19.6 lakh crore, spread across group companies such as Adani Enterprises and Adani Power.

The Sunil Bharti Mittal family of Bharti Airtel followed at ₹12.1 lakh crore, with the Dilip Shanghvi family of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries third at ₹4.55 lakh crore. The Poonawalla family of Serum Institute of India and the Damani family of Avenue Supermarts also featured prominently in the first-generation list.

The 2026 report introduced a dedicated list of the top 100 first-generation family businesses, with a combined value of ₹77.8 lakh crore. This is nearly 62 per cent of the value held by the top 100 established, multi-generational business houses. The figure shows that founder-led wealth creation has moved firmly into the front rank of India’s economy, and the rise of first-generation entrepreneurs is now one of the defining trends of the list.

Most Valuable Women-Led Business: Hindustan Zinc

Hindustan Zinc, led by Chairperson Priya Agarwal Hebbar, emerged as the most valuable women-led business in India on the 2026 list, with a valuation of ₹4.5 lakh crore. Hebbar, who is part of the Anil Agarwal family, heads India’s largest and the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer. She became Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc in January 2023 and also serves as a director on the board of Vedanta.

Roshni Nadar Malhotra of HCL Technologies ranked second among women-led businesses at ₹2.91 lakh crore, followed by Nisaba Godrej of Godrej Industries. The women leaders list reflects a growing presence of women at the helm of large Indian family enterprises across metals, IT, consumer goods and pharmaceuticals. Falguni Nayar of FSN E-Commerce Ventures was the only woman leading a first-generation business on the list.

Hindustan Zinc was incorporated on 10 January 1966 from the erstwhile Metal Corporation of India as a public-sector undertaking. The government later disinvested its stake, and the company came under the Vedanta group. It is headquartered in Udaipur, Rajasthan, and operates mines at Rampura Agucha, Rajpura-Dariba, Sindesar Khurd, Kayad and Zawar, along with smelters at Chanderiya, Debari and Dariba. The company has been ranked by S&P Global as the world’s most sustainable metals and mining firm for three consecutive years.

Key Findings and Significance

The combined value of India’s top 300 family businesses rose 27.5 per cent since the 2024 edition of the list, adding nearly ₹30 lakh crore in two years. On average, these families created ₹4,076 crore of value every single day during the period. This growth came even as the Nifty 50 declined 1.1 per cent and the Sensex fell 3.7 per cent, showing that family businesses outperformed the broader stock market.

The number of families worth $1 billion or more jumped 48 per cent in a single year to 230. The top 10 families account for 51 per cent of the total value of the list, and the top three alone are together worth ₹42 lakh crore, roughly 9 per cent of India’s total listed market capitalisation. The 300 families together employ more than 54 lakh people and generate revenue of about ₹50 lakh crore.

For the economy, the list matters on several fronts. Family businesses drive employment, investment and tax collections, and their institutionalisation is being watched closely by the government and the financial sector. India is on the cusp of the largest intergenerational wealth transfer in its history, with a large part of this family wealth expected to pass from founders to the next generation in the coming decade.

The Way Forward

As family wealth grows, the focus is shifting to how this wealth is preserved and managed across generations. Succession planning, professional governance, family office structures, liquidity management and global diversification are becoming priority areas for business-owning families in India. Barclays Private Bank India’s head, Adrish Ghosh, has noted that these concerns will be central to keeping family enterprises competitive.

The rising share of first-generation entrepreneurs, the growing presence of women leaders and the professionalisation of family firms all point to a broader and more institutionalised base of wealth creation in India. With more than half of the top families already operating some form of family office, the coming years are likely to see family businesses become more structured, more transparent and more integrated into the country’s capital markets.
