The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) equal to 78 days wages for 11,40,770 railway employees on 14 October 2026. The payout involves a total outlay of ₹2,009.61 crore. It is linked to the performance of Indian Railways during 2025-26 and will be paid before the Durga Puja and Dussehra festival season.
What Is Productivity Linked Bonus?
The Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) is an annual incentive paid to railway employees based on the productivity and overall performance of Indian Railways. The PLB rewards higher freight loading, better passenger movement, safety, punctuality and efficient use of resources, and it motivates staff to keep improving railway operations.
Indian Railways introduced this bonus system in the late 1970s after an agreement with staff federations. It is different from a fixed festival bonus. The amount depends on railway performance in a financial year, and the Union Cabinet fixes the number of bonus days each year. For more than a decade, the Cabinet has consistently approved 78 days wages as PLB, including for 2025-26.
The PLB for railway staff must not be confused with ad hoc or non-productivity bonus. Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) personnel are excluded from PLB. They receive a separate ad hoc bonus equal to 30 days emoluments.
Railway Bonus 2026: Cabinet Approval and Payment Timeline
The Union Cabinet approved the railway bonus for 2026 on 14 October 2026 for the financial year 2025-26. The approval covers 11,40,770 eligible employees with a financial outlay of ₹2,009.61 crore. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in recognition of the excellent performance of railway staff.
The Railway Board issues the formal bonus order after Cabinet approval, and zonal railways then credit the amount directly to salary accounts. The Indian Railways pays this PLB every year before the Durga Puja and Dussehra holidays, so employees receive the money in time for the festival season that leads up to Diwali. For 2026, the payment was cleared in mid-October, matching the usual September to October announcement window.
The scale of the payout has grown with the workforce covered. In the previous year, the Cabinet had approved ₹1,865.68 crore for 10,91,146 employees for 2024-25. The 2026 approval adds nearly 50,000 more beneficiaries and about ₹144 crore in additional outlay, while keeping the bonus at the same 78-day level.

How Much Bonus Will Railway Employees Get?
Eligible railway employees will receive a maximum bonus of ₹17,951 for 78 days under the 2026 PLB approval. The total national payout is ₹2,009.61 crore for 11.4 lakh staff. Employees who worked for only part of the year receive a proportionately lower amount.
The ₹17,951 figure is a ceiling, not a flat payment for everyone. It applies to employees whose calculated wages reach or cross the official wage ceiling. Staff with lower average emoluments receive less, based on their actual pay. Part-year service, leave without pay and other service conditions also reduce the final amount under railway rules.
The amount is credited as part of salary income and is fully taxable under the Income Tax rules. Indian Railways deducts tax at source where applicable, so the in-hand credit can be lower for employees in higher tax slabs.
How Is Railway Bonus Calculated?
Indian Railways calculates PLB on notional monthly wages capped at ₹7,000 per month, not on the actual salary drawn by the employee. The formula divides the capped monthly wage by 30.4, which is the average number of days in a month, and then multiplies it by the 78 bonus days.
In simple terms, even if a loco pilot or station master earns a much higher basic pay, the bonus is calculated as if the monthly pay were only ₹7,000. This is why employees across very different posts receive the same maximum of ₹17,951. The ₹7,000 ceiling has remained unchanged since 2014-15.
The ceiling has become a point of debate. Staff associations, including the Indian Railways Technical Supervisors Association, have asked the government to raise the ceiling to ₹18,000 to match the minimum basic pay under the Seventh Pay Commission. At ₹18,000, the same 78-day formula would give about ₹46,184. The National Council of the Joint Consultative Machinery has also sought a ceiling of ₹21,000. The government has not accepted these demands so far, and the 2026 bonus continues on the old ceiling.
Who Is Eligible for the Railway Bonus?
The 2026 PLB covers all eligible non-gazetted railway employees, which means staff in Group C and former Group D categories who do not hold gazetted officer rank. The term non-gazetted refers to employees whose appointments are not notified in the Gazette of India and who work in operational, technical, clerical and supervisory roles.
The bonus will reach staff across the country, including track maintainers, loco pilots, train managers (guards), station masters, supervisors, technicians, technician helpers, pointsmen and ministerial staff. These categories form the frontline workforce that runs trains, maintains tracks, handles signalling and serves passengers. The Railway Board, which functions under the Ministry of Railways and is headquartered in New Delhi, coordinates payment through all railway zones and production units.
Personnel of the RPF and RPSF are not covered under PLB. Contract workers, casual labourers without temporary status and gazetted officers are also outside this scheme. Casual labourers with temporary status receive a separate ad hoc bonus calculated on notional wages of ₹1,200 per month.
Why 78 Days? Railways Record Performance in 2025-26
Indian Railways linked the 2026 bonus directly to its record operational performance in 2025-26. Freight loading touched an all-time high of 1,670 million tonnes, a growth of 3.25 percent over the previous year. Passenger traffic also rose to 741 crore passengers, up from 716 crore in 2024-25.
Freight earnings reached about ₹1,77,754 crore, while passenger revenue rose to about ₹80,000 crore. Higher movement of fertilisers, finished steel, pig iron, iron ore and cement drove the freight growth. Five new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals were commissioned, and wagon handling rose by more than 4 percent, reflecting better capacity use and faster turnaround.
The festival timing also matters. PLB acts as a demand boost during the festive season, when household spending rises. The government has noted that timely payment before Durga Puja and Dussehra supports both staff welfare and consumption in the wider economy.
